The drum light has been flashing for a while, but is still printing. Do we need to replace the whole drum?
We have just changed our drum unit but the drum light is still flashing. The printer is printing though. Any suggestions?
If you mean the image drum then you can use it until the print quality is really bad or until the point where printer will stop allowing you to use it. Depending on the model of printer they allow differant page counts before the printer tells you the drum is bad. Drum might still be printing perfectly fine but the printer will still say it is bad.
A new image drum is worth about $40 and up. It is replaced in the same manner as a toner cartridge. It only takes a minute to do.

The drum light is triggered by a page counter. To reset it, hold the GO button with the drum door opened until the light goes out (10 seconds). Close the door and it should be reset.

Hello Pat ,
You might not need a new drum .
Try this as it resets the bios on the 2040 and you can get some decent life out of your drum ... Done it about 6 times on one printer and it still goes fine .
1. turn the printer off
2 . check that the front cover is open
3 press and hold the go button and while holding turn the printer on .
4.check that the toner/ drum/paper / leds are all on .
5 . release the Go button and check that all LED go out.
6 Press the go button twice .
7 Check the toner / drum/paper Led are now on
8 Press the go button six times
9 close the front cover .
You should now be away .
cheers and good luck .
Mike

The drum counter will have to be reset, Use the following steps.
1. Open the front door.
2. Press and hold the cancel button (x button) until all the lights flash in in order.
3. Then close the front cover.
This will reset the drum counter so that you can continue to print.
