My printer will not print black. What can I do? I just got a new black cartridge but did not work.
Try to check if protected plastic is remove, also try to run clean head maintenance may be some solid ink stored in printer head.
I have the same problem. My printer is only 2 years old and all of a sudden it stopped printing in black. I replaced all the ink cartridges and the printheads and it still wouldn't print. I tried HP solutions, but to no avail. Local repair shops all suggested to buy a new printer since that would be cheaper. I finally resigned myself that this could not be fixed (at least not at a reasonable price) and was lucky enough to find another NEW L7680 on e-bay for a very good price.

Hi Manavoc,
I will explain you the cause for it.
It prints in yellow first and then override with black for better quality. This is the reason your color ink gets empty.

SOURCE: new black print cartridge not working
I only use refill HP inks. When the cartridge prints gray instead of sharp black it means the ink well is clogged. Yes, that can happen on a new cartridge. Sometimes it happens when they put too much ink in the cartridge, or even heat can make it not work. Also streaking black lines is the problem of the ink not coming out properly. Easiest thing to do is go to a refill station like Cartridge World and have them test it or clean it out. You can also make sure the printer, not the cartridge is clean. Ink builds up an pools. Get some Q-Tips and clean up all that spilled ink. Sometimes in the software it says you can clean the print head, do that too.

Either the print head for black is faulty, or the wiring to the black print head on carriage are broken. Try also cleaning the metal sensor to the black cartridge inside the ink carriage.
