After receiving this advice, I tried the factory reset as a last resort, and lo and behold!
My phone now works. Let this serve as a warning to anyone who's been told "sorry, get a new phone." Always get a second opinion! After receiving this advice, I tried the factory reset as a last resort, and lo and behold!

A hard reset would be in order...just remember to remove your microSD memory card to avoid it possibly being erased. Here is what you do. Power down the phone. Press the volume down and the power button at the same time and hold them until you see the HTC logo. A white screen will come up with menu options. Press volume down until you get to factory reset. Press the power button the the phone will restore to factory settings.
HOpe you did the hard reset by pressing and holding home +power and then alt+w .
Does pressing and holding camera and power gives you the bootloader ( Hboot ) screen . IF yes , try reset from there .
ALso CLick HERE for more details .
It can be microphone problem that is why the person you're trying to talked can't hear you, some can be done on software programming, other can be fix it by replacing the mic component. But i prefer to use your warranty card and get free charge of it,or if its no HTC service center near you,try to ask assistance to any mobile service shop preferably.DIY is not advisable for android phones, you might brake something and fixing this type of mobile is to complicated.
wipe the phone clean remove the battery and out it back in hold the home & power button at the same time untill black screen pops up press ALT and W to wipe & that should fix the problem
If it keeps rebooting itself at the G1 and Android screen, you might want to factory reset the phone and clear all the data as there may be a virus. To do this, when turning on the phone, hold the home button and the power button even while the G1 screen comes up. Keep holding these until an image with a triangle comes up. You will then wait 5-10 seconds, and press the home and power button again together. This will bring up the OS screen, and provide you 4 options. One of these options is to wipe and restore to factory. Do this and your phone should work fine after you reboot again.
Try getting into recovery mode. Hold down home and press power. Keep holding home down while the phone boots. Can you get into recovery mode? You can just pull the battery after testing this.
You can also try holding "menu" while booting. This should put you in "safe" mode. If this works, then use the settings menu to do a factory reset and reboot.
You have to press the house, menu, and end key at the same time ...wait until a triangle shows up on the screen then it will give you the options , this resets everything so save contacts, picture and other things youd like to keep
