After putting a known good tape in the deck, push play, if the tape doesn't move, try rewind and FF. If nothing happens, the deck has a problem. I assume this is a cassette deck. If so, I always try the thrift stores for a new(used) one. There are good bargains there.
The Bias control is used during recording. If you turn down the bias,
you will get more highs, but the distortion will increase, and then
start to increase dramatically if you back off the bias more.
As far as playing tapes from different decks goes.......
1..Does the tape that you recorded on your deck sound OK on your deck ?
2..Does the tape that you recorded on your deck sound OK on other decks ?
If 1 and 2 are true, then your deck is OK.
If the tapes recorded on a specific deck sound bar on yours, but 1 and 2 are true, then the other deck is faulty.
When a deck leaves the factory, the head is aligned to a " standard "
tape. By standard tape I mean a very special tape recorded in such a
way, that a tech can tell if the head is out of align and "tweek " the
physical alignment of the tape head..
All decks are aligned just a little differently, but fairly close to each other.
first do the mechanicals....is the head of your deck spotlessly clean ?.
Use 99% pure isopropanol alcohol and a cotton swab. Never use anything
metal to clean the tape head. If you scratch the head, its toast.
If your deck is clean, plays its own recordings well, and those
recordings play well on other decks, then your deck is not the problem.
for a start your title says "Problem with the Technics RS-TR272 Single Cassette Deck" So is it a single or double? i'm assuming it's a double, right only one of the decks records so put the blank tape into it make sure the tabs on the top of the tape haven't been broke or you'll need to cover the holes with the labels you get with the tape. put the tape with the music on it, in the other deck rewind them both then press "sync rec" & they should both set off.
You're describing what could be a loose or worn loading belt problem, most of the vcr mechanisms used in these combos use one to load the tape and thread it for it to play or record, that is why you have to keep puhing the tape untill the machine accepts the tape and you have to keep pressing play untill it starts the play function.
The most likely culprits here are belts. This unit has belts and a rubber idler. Replace all of the rubber parts and you should be OK. This is a normal maintenance procedure for VCRs.
Dan
Usually when a tape starts to play automatically this means that the tab on the back of tape has been removed to stop others recording over it check the tab little black tab in a recess on back edge of tape if this is missing you can put a bit of sellotape over the whole to blank it off this will tell the video tape is ok to record on. However if the tab is still in place the try putting a small bit of tape over it also to raise the clearence slightly then put back in video and try to record if this still dont work then the mechanism that detects the tab has failed these can be replace but usuall parts are hard to come by now as they no longer make vcrs any more but let me know ok i can assist you further just check tabs in place even try raising it with a bit of card stuck over tab with tape this might make the tab switch work if it has wonr down abit let me know ok. As you look form back of tape the tab is bottom left hand corner check its flush with the tape if not use sellotape to repair let me know the outcome ok
the vcr is on threshold of belt life. try replacing (or cleaning with alcohol) the take-up reel belt. The vcr has a built-in time-out feature to protect the video tape. if it takes too long for things to happen, shut-down occurs.
