How much does a motor cost for this mixer

Hi CAKE_LADY196, Happy New Year! So you want to replace your mixer’s electric motor? Good for you! However, before you start taking your mixer apart, be sure you have the Parts List manual on hand. If you're lacking one, you can download a PDF version from the KA website at: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number, in your case use KSM50P (Your K5SS mixer falls within this manual), and select the first file KSM50P.pdf (438.31 KB) listed under Parts List (4) and then check to verify this matches your mixer model.
Turn to pages 6 & 7, titled: “Motor And Control Parts”, which provides an exploded view for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixers electrical components, along with all the parts. Locate Illus. Nos. 41 and 8, Field Assembly, 115V (the stator) and Armature and Bearing, 115V. You will need these two components to totally replace your mixer’s electric motor, although it is possible, you only need the armature and bearing. Whether you replace both motor parts or just the armature, I would suggest replacing the brushes, too.
Costs will run between $71 ~$99 for repair parts, plus shipping & handling and any sales tax depending on the vendor you select.
Here are five potential vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com; and Grainger.com (for grease). You should search for ‘food grade grease’ online (although I’ve seen automotive bearing grease used too – your call). Prices can vary widely between vendors, so do some comparison shopping.
Once apart you can check for any other unseemly wear and tear on the gears, etc. It can be messy but quite gratifying to diagnose and repair your mixer yourself.
Finally, here are some links to several excellent websites that detail the disassembly/reassembly of a KA Mixer. The mixers displayed in the links are different KA models, but the principles are the same.
Between these three websites and their excellent pictures and descriptions and your Parts List manual, you should now be able to completely disassemble and reassemble your mixer.
Good luck, I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA

Mixer quit working

Quite likely you overloaded the capacity of the motor and it simply overheated. The brushes inside the motor may be burned out/corroded. I suggest putting a light load on it and seeing how it performs. Often, when this kind of thing occurs, a bit of light duty use will get the motor back into good working order. But be careful to not over-tax the unit again. There are several different KitchenAid mixers on the market, some nothing more than ornamental, all the way up to commercial-grade.

Mixer gets hot and smokes when in use.

Smoking and overheating during use does not usually indicate a problem with motor oil. Kitchenaid stand mixers have sufficient oil in them to lubricate the motor for its lifetime.

Smoking and overheating are geneally caused by overuse. Consult your use and care guide or Kitchenaid Customer Service to ensure the mixer is being used properly. Customer Service would also be able to send you a new Use and Care Guide at no charge.

Their toll-free telephone number is 1-800-541-6390.

Motor is running but the paddle won't move.

If you bought this mixer less then 1 year ago, call KitchenAid at 800-541-6390. They have a "hassle-free replacement" warranty. They should ship you another mixer. I bought one recently and it died after 3 days of use. I called and they are sending me a new one. However, it is not comforting that these mixers fail so quickly. KithenAid use to be made a product to last many years. I assume the quality has declined. Good luck!

Mixer Repair

Kitchenaid doesn't repair anything over 1 year old. I have one that is 3 years old (KSM90). I have used it less than 10 times and it stopped working. The plastic piece in the back of the unit that holds all of the wires snapped. There are no repair centers in my state (new mexico). They told me I can pay $32 to have them send me a "repair kit" that includes shipping to and from a repair center and a box and packing materials. They then call you to tell you how much the repair is going to be. If you choose NOT to have them repair it, they charge you a $25 diagnositc fee just for looking at it on top of the $32 you spent to ship it there and back. It's a shame that this appliance costs over $300 and this is the service they give you.
