It sounds like the thermostat might be allowing the water to boil and cause the grounds to be scorched and making your coffee bitter. It also could be caused by the machine needing to be cleaned and delimed. I would recommend you do this first-and if you don't have the use and care manual, you may call Customer Service to have one sent out or access one at www.bunn.com @ home, then products.

Hi. My new tchibo coffee maker won't brew the large sized coffee, instead only giving me about a tablespoon in my cup. The other sizes work fine. Suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Hi there! I'm sorry to hear that your Tchibo coffee maker is not brewing the large size coffee properly. Here are a few suggestions that might help:
  1. Check the water level in the water tank. If the water level is too low, the machine may not be able to brew the large size coffee.
  2. Make sure that the coffee filter is properly inserted into the filter holder. If the filter is not inserted properly, the machine may not be able to brew the large size coffee.
  3. Clean the coffee maker. The coffee maker may be clogged, which can prevent it from brewing the large size coffee properly. You can clean the coffee maker with a mild detergent and water.
  4. Descale the coffee maker. If the coffee maker is not descaled regularly, it can build up calcium deposits, which can prevent it from brewing the large size coffee properly. You can descale the coffee maker with a descaling solution.
If you have checked all of these things and the large size coffee is still not brewing properly, then you may need to contact Tchibo customer support for further assistance.
Here are some additional tips that might help:
  • Use fresh, cold water. Stale or warm water can affect the taste of the coffee.
  • Use a good quality coffee. Cheap coffee beans can make the coffee taste bitter.
  • Grind the coffee beans to a medium-coarse grind. A too fine grind can make the coffee taste bitter, while a too coarse grind can make the coffee taste weak.
  • Clean the coffee maker regularly. A dirty coffee maker can make the coffee taste bitter.
I hope these suggestions help!

We have a C Series Bunn single coffee make that has two different sized clear plastic water hoses connected with a barbed fitting. I can not find a manual that shows me this fitting.

It sounds like the T-Barbed fitting on top just before the brew head. There is a water by-pass system on large commercial brewers. The idea is that it's possible to over-extract the ground coffee if too much water is poured into the worn out ground. There are several types of systems and ideas on how to overcome this problem. over extraction is one of the causes of bitter coffee. You've tasted old peculated coffee from old brewers of the 1950-60's.
* the t-barb fitting comes from the main brew head valve then tees off to the bypass port which can have another solenoid or just a pin valve. the pin valve is manually adjusted to flow anytime the brew head valve is turned on. water is partially diverted to by-pass the grounds and drips directly along the inside of the brew funnel. Open it too much and you get weak watery coffee. Too little then stronger bitter coffee. I suggest turning it all the way clockwise (off) then opening it 3-1/2 turns. Check and adjust to taste.
* you should call your vendor for service and parts if needed.
* Parts are available from Bunn vendors,, Amazon, or your local restaurant supply as Bunn is a very common brand. Curtis parts may fit too. The barb is a standard 3/8th T fitting if I remember right. You may also find it at a Refrigeration plumbing supply like COSCO plumbing (Not the COSTCO membership store)
* It's just a divert-er so even a nylon t-fitting may work.
* Final; you can find the parts and manuals from Bunn.com even some of the discontinued models.

How can I avoid bitter coffee?

If the water that comes into contact with the coffee grounds is too hot, you will extract bitter elements from the coffee. The water should not be boiling when poured on the coffee grounds. Coffee oils, fats and sediment are the natural parts of the coffee bean that causes bitterness by forming as the brew ages. The longer the coffee sits the stronger it tastes.

Bitter taste

You will likely find the bitterness is a function of your coffee bean choice or the 'roast' component of that coffee. Darker roasts tend to taste bitter.

Over time, my coffee has become acrid and bitter. I use fresh ground coffee and clean my pot regularly...what else should I do?

There may be some buildup in the machine other than in the pot itself. To test this, try running the brew cycle with no beans. Taste the hot water. If it's acrid and bitter, your problem lies in buildup (such as the basket). Otherwise, if the hot water just tastes like hot water, then the temperature of the water has probably become too high (that will make coffee tastes more bitter). If this is the problem, there's probably no fix (just make sure you fill the reservoir with cold, not hot, water).

How many ounces or cups of ground coffee is standard for a Bunn dual dbc to make a 1/2 gallon of brewed coffee?

For a half gallon of brewed coffee you should start with a "volume" measure of 10 oz. The reason I recommend a volume measure is because the weight could be completely different using light roast or dark roast coffees. Brewing by volume you can have consistency throughout. The main object is to have the same surface area of grounds for your brewing. The 10 oz. volume should equal between 3.75 and 4.25 ounces by weight. Adjust by taste to your palette but don't sway too low in amount of grounds, otherwise you will stand to "over-extract" and your coffee will taste bitter and will have no body or mouth-feel.

Our Saeco Vienna deluxe had a couple of problems: the grinder wouldn't stop grinding..coffee all over the place...stopped it cleaned it and it's ok. The other problem is that it takes forever for a small...

What does the coffee produced taste like, is it bitter and watery, is there any creama on the espresso shot. Try adjusting the grind and the coffee level, maybe a little coarser.

Coffee is weak and watery

After reviewing troubleshooting diagrams, I really couldn't find a solution to your problem.

The only thing I can suggest is to use 2 oz per pot of coffee grounds. Your 5 or 6 scoops assuming they are one ounce each is way more than enough.

Look under where your basket goes. Most bunn coffee maker has a flavor guard on the downspout. this down spout actually helps distributes the water over the whole basket of coffee grounds. Most of the time I see these missing, and when they are gone, they are gone.

Use less water for the amount of coffee you are using first. Sadly when there is not enough water, the coffee tastes bitter. Too much water tastes weak. Hot water extracts certain elements out of the beans even after grinding.

Always use a fresh paperfilter designed for your coffee maker.
If this pot is not work correctly still, I will suggest seeing your appliance repair technician.

My bunn is too slow

Use the de-liming spring to clean the copper tube behind the spray head. Pour several pots of clear white vinegar through the unit to further remove lime and scale from the interior of your coffee maker. My Bunn is 24 years old, and the only replacement parts I've ever required are new carafes and the 4041 silicone washer repair kit.
