Here are some simple things to try first for a camera that won't take a picture when the shutter button is pressed, or with an inoperative flash. They won't work for every case, but they're worth a try:

Everything else functions proberly with the exeption of the flash

Rotate the mode dial on top to AUTO and take a picture indoors. Did the flash work? If not, next check the tightness of all screws around the perimeter of the camera (these are sometimes used as a safety feature to turn off flash if the camera is opened). If a screw is loose, tighten it. If a screw is missing, you'll need to find a replacement. Usually only one or two screws are used as the safety switch. Try swapping out one of the other screws as a replacement. Finally, if no screws are missing, and the camera does not flash in AUTO indoors, then unfortunately the flash mechanism has failed. This is difficult to replace, and is only recommended to be repaired by a Canon service center.

My PowerShot A620 lens isn't working

Don't even try unless you know what you are doing - you can get a nasty belt off a charged flash capacitor (around 300volts) - the lens is more than likely clogged up with sand, this will wear the sliding tracks in the zoom very quickly and will render it useless.
You can buy new lens assemblies (Colchester Camera Repairs) but the cost will be high, around £80.00 just for the part.
