I have a sharp AL-1000 copier. When turned on, a very loud whining noise comes from left side. It is not the fan or the motherboard. I can still make copies though. Any ideas?

This particular main board doesn't have the video integrated into the mobo, so it's got a video card. Often the video card has a fan. The fan could be causing the noise. Have you tried briefly unplugging the processor fan to see if the noise stops?
Sounds like the scanner is locked. Look under the scanner where the paper comes out, there is a clear wheel, turn it all the way one way or the other and that will unlock the scanner.
there is severl thing this could be 1. paper feed cluch need cleaned 2-bypayss roller lift arm need removed, 3-or the drum unit need clened out . all thses thing can be dones easilly by a sharp tech about $120 should do it. note this is the only model of copier left that you can refill the toner unit for $6 & drum for $15 ( id keep it )
Take out the glass and clean optics, mirrors etc. Very important clean the white stripe underneath the cover that is attached to the left side of glass. That should take care of L1.
That has to do with the laser unit and/or the white shading plate.
First remove the platen glass and clean the white strip on the bottom side. BE CAREFUL FOR THE GRAY OR BLACK LINE ON THE STRIPE IF YOU WIPE IT WITH A SOLVENT AND REMOVE THE LINE YOU ARE DONE.
If the unit is making a whining noise it is probably the laser unit polygon motor.
If the scanner mirror system is hanging or not returning to home position check to see that the scanner lock on the underside of the scanner where the paper comes out is unlocked.
if a number and alphabeth appears alternately The copier will not function. Turn the power switch off, remove the power cord from the outlet, contact any authorized service representative for overall service maintainance
