The printer has no way of knnowing that you have changed the Photoconductor Unit, unless you tell it (as there is not chip on the Photoconductor).
The Photconductor reset procedure is as follows.
Dell 1700
RESETTING DRUM PAGE COUNTER
1) Leave the power on, insert toner cartridge, and leave door open
2) Press the cancel button and hold till the leds flash
3) Release cancel button and close toner cartridge door
I wish I would have found this site before purchasing a new drum and toner. What an absolute waste of money and time.
It's perhaps not quite the waste of money you might first think.
The toner you will use in time anyway.
The drum unit has a waste toner collector which has a quite small capacity (plenty enough for its rated capacity). You could obviously just reset the drum 'counter' without actually changing the drum, but if the waste toner section could then very quickly overspill, resulting in waste toner 'spewing' into the printer, and causing all manner of problems.
Resetting the drum counter is ONLY a VERY short term measure, and the drum needed to be replaced (or refurbished - which isn't necessarily just amptying the waste toner out !!

The light is second to the right is Toner Low. If ! and toner low displays a flashing light it means that the photoconductor kit is full and must be replaced. The printer will not print any more pages until the photoconductor kit is replaced.
Press and release Continue button to print a photoconductor kit instruction page. If the light is still blinking, replace the photoconductor kit.
