My first thought is that the throttle lever is being pushed so far forward ( max RPM's ) that you are running the engine 1/2 or better choked
Look at the choke butterfly with the throttle in your normal run position it should be completely open
This may require and adjustment in the control rods or might be as simple as not pushing the throttle wide open

Spark plugs foul immediately

Fouled plugs may be caused by oil leaking into the cylinder. Does it smoke when running (cold), are you using up the crank oil. Black smoke is excess gas comsumption, blue smoke is oil burning. If your plug is fouled with black carbon, you are most likely running to rich.

My 24 hp B&S starts and runs good for 1/2 hour then it will not start when you try to start it. After it sits over night it will start and run for 1/2 minute then quits and will not start again.

Running for 1/2 minute then stopping sounds like the carb's fuel bowl is starving for fuel. I would check the carb's float and needle and seat to verify it is not sticking. Usually when the engine runs there is enough vibration to unstick it. I would also look at fuel filter (disconnect the fuel line to the carb and verify that fuel flows freely - try not to spill too much).

I have an old 3.5 hp Briggs and stratton on a masport lawn mower, it has started blowing smoke when it is unning, could someone give me a clue as to whether this is likely to be rings, vaulves, etc, or is...

Hello,

Start by checking the oil level. It should not be overfull. If it is it will smoke, and it will soak your air filter , then foul your plug.

Check this first.

Let me know,Matt

21 hp briggs on husky mower runs fine but intermittently acts like it is flooding ie.it starts losing power and i can see small amount of black smoke.if i pull the choke on easy it will stall.sometimes...

I had the same problem with mine. I talked to briggs help line and that was useless and also talked to 6 other repair shops. Seems to be a dirty little secret they are keeping about the defective carbs they use. Only way to fix it is to get the redesigned carb they have out now. They changed the fuel bowl and solenoid assembly. Carb kits did me no good.

20.0 HP 502CC B&S engine, riding mower - stopped going full speed, black smoke from muffler, "misses" ALOT - model number looks like a backwards E followed by 1P977

Carb flooded or extremely out of adjustment and or completely malfunctioning.

Disassemble carb and inspect Float and needle valve.

Hope this provided some ideas for your repair.

Briggs and Stratton 22hp v twin OHV smoking badly

First thing to do is pull your dipstick and check for broken or missing O-ring also as you pull it, look to make certain that it was seated properly and all the way locked. If either condition exists, you will be leaking into the crankcase which will cause your symptoms
