How do I set up a OS. I bought a new OS (operation system) and two of the mirrors show up as critical. Can I install a new OS over them? I have been told that the mirrors have to be broken in order to install a OS. Problem no disks came with it. So how do I set up a new OS?

Hi,

Its very difficult to have an OS installed without an OS installation disk. The simple reason is when you boot the system with the OS disk it will take you through stages where you can break the mirrors and create new ones. I tried finding suggestions to install from backups but did not find any. Not sure if you can install OS from backups on PowerEdge.

Find the link bellow from Dell who have some suggestion about booting via floppy. Were you provided with Floppy. You can search on Dell's support site by entering the service tag:

1. Damaged hard drive is a very common cause for that problem. Once your OS is not 'readable' some parts of the drive might be damaged and is best to change hard drive and reinstall OS and applications.

2. A very corrupted OS (you deleted critical parts of the OS or have a virus) might fail to load and then you could perform a restoration if you have the OS on a drive or a reinstallation.

How to format the system?
You can completely wipe out your system by employing DBAN ( http://www.dban.org/ ) - *CAREFUL*, there is no undoing this format! Backup any important data on an external drive or unit.

Once formatted, you can reinstall your system using any OS CD/DVD (by preference, those which came with the system).

If what you're doing is trying to recover a broken OS, you may try a "recovery install" from the OS CD/DVDs before resorting to a complete format.

Operating System not found
Vista OS is corrupt...you may need to re-install the OS....
some or many of the required files to load the OS is corrupt or missing...

the solution: Re-install Vista OS or Win7 or XP....
if your have your HD partitiond and have only OS and re-instalable programs in C: / and keep your critical data in say D: or E:..drive.....then you just need to format only C: and install the OS again....

Laptop shows only 4gb ram & 300 gb hdd
This is the limitation of a 32 bit (x86) Operating System. A 32 bit OS can detect upto 3GB RAM only.

You may either try installing the x64 Bit of XP Operating System or Vista Service Pack 1 or 2 for 32 bit Vista Operation System to resolve the issue.

After installing the SP 1 or 2 of the Vista OS in the Computer, the OS will detect 4GB RAM.

Why no updates? No windows validation? That could be your problem if that's the case.
If not, I suggest going to Windows update and at least installing all critical updates, if not SP3 as well, and try again

Replacement of rear view mirror S60
We own a 2004 XC 70 Volvo AWD. The interior rear view mirror decided to die. There is a discolored patch (bubble type) in the middle section of the mirror. A new one will set us back a cool grand! Does anyone out there know how to fix it?
Volvo dealer says:
  • It cannot be replaced with a used one.
  • It's software operated.
  • A similar one from a similar car will not work, It will play havoc with other components, ie: sun roof, electric windows, etc.
All I needed was a new battery. They installed a new one, and I think that's waht caused the rear view mirror to go bad. They probably shorted the system as they were installing the battery.
