I just get a white screen and the apple symbol flashing in the center with a folder symbol and a circle with a slash then nothing happens
The flashing folder with hard drive symbol is telling you that the computer cannot find a bootable system folder (operating system). This could be because the hard drive is working properly, or the operating system folder has become corrupted. Try booting up from the system CD or DVD that came with your Mac Book Pro and see if it can repair your hard drive.
Well, I don't have an exact solution, but I know why it's doing that. Yesterday I was working on making a movie on another Mac. The movie file was too big when I tried to import it into the mac that was flashing, so stupid me decided to make room for it by deleting stuff off of the hard drive. I deleted a few folders I thought weren't important but evidently those folders helped me run my computer. B(
So today when I tried to turn it back on, there was a flashing folder with a question mark on it then an apple symbol and then a circle with a line through it repeatedly flashed an nothing else happened. I realized that this was most likely the problem.
I don't know how to fix it, just what started the problem.

Another alternative is to hold the "option" key as the Mac boots up to force it to recheck possible blessed start-up disks. If your hard disk drive shows up, select it. When it boots into OS X, immediately back up your data and restart the Mac with the OS X DVD (or CD) Install Disk. When you're in the boot menu from the OS X Install Disk, select "Utilities" then "Repair drive" and select your HDD. That should help OS X repair any file permissions or data corruption that may have occurred. I would also look into getting a new HDD. It seems to me that your current one may be failing and need replacement.

Normal procedure is to reset the NVRAM and PRAM then "remind" your Mac where to find the system folder. (This problem sometimes happens when the system folder is moved, renamed or deleted.)
It may be necessary to reinstall the operating system. (Fortunately, if you use the "archive and install" option, you can do this without erasing the hard drive or losing your user data.)

Once you have a install CD, I would recommend backing up your system by making a disk image of the hard drive to an external drive. Then doing a clean install and then using the Migration Assistant to restore your user files to the clean install on your hard drive.

MY SCREEN STAYS THE SAME JUST WITH THE APPLE LOGO AND NOTHING ELSE.
