Possible resons... the fan motor is bad...the fan plug in the housing has vibrated out....the wire to the fan outlet came loose from the wire nut connection inside the electical box...
try plugging a light or other small electrical device into the fan plug and see if it works (be sure the wall switch is on) it will help you determine the remaining possibilities. try plugging the fan into an extension cord to see if it works, if it runs then the fan is ok and the problem is in the wiring connection. if it doesn't work, the fan motor is bad.
hope this helps....jay

    fans 101.
1:the fan is packed in grease clean it.
    2:the fan is bad.
3:the controller is bad, to it, or related parts bad (caps and ballast or switches)

4:or the last owner , unplugged, it above.
you didnt say it quite last week or now.
only that it does not work
    history matters, in most cases.
5:even the wrong fan motor installed! yah !

do not hot wire the fan as jay says
if the fan uses ballast or cap start it will burn up and you can get burned touching it red hot. do not hot wires things you do not understand.! ok, and jay, that be a bad act.

there are 100s of fans used in vents.
many not close to same. and many that can not be simply hot wired ! A hard cold fact.

the fan does not hum? or make any noise.
    is my post.
if it hums turn it off and unpack the grease.

I just moved into a house with a Gaggenau EB 846-6. Light and fan work. Heating element doesn't seem to work in top or bottom 'socket'. Also, neither heating indicator light illuminates

since neither light is going on, then i believe that you either have a bad thermostat, or possibly that you only have half of the voltage going to it, and gaggenau doesn't have gas units so it doesn't have a glow bar like the previous guy said.

I have a Hampton Bay Windward II ceiling fan. Fan works fine but fluorescent light doesn't. Have done some troubleshooting. Obviously 120V input is OK otherwise fan wouldn't work. Wires to the...

sounds like there is a lose or broken conection from were the feed to the balast slits from the main fan conection try rewireing from the live imput to the balast see if that solves it.

My fan works but the lighting unit doesn't. Take it back? Wiring problem? I have the San Marino model.

If this is new piece and has not worked you need to recheck teh wiring before the unit is suspected.
Check the seperate line for the light circuit. If the connections are correct then the light unit can be faulty . If this is new get a replacement.

Light works, fan does not

Is it a multi speed fan and it doesn`t work on any speed?? Does the fan spin easily?? If not, the bearings have failed. If you can spin it easily, you`ll probably find that the ground wire in the coil has burned away in the connector or within the field coil windings themnselves. If it was just one of the coils, you would be missing one speed only but if it doesn`t work at all, it sounds like the grounding coil that`s failed. Ian
