Check if the warranty will cover this. If it does, they may be able to repair it and keep your data at the same time. Opening it would be a bad idea because that immediately voids your warranty. If you do open it, usually you can find some screws to take out, or they are just snapped together, a small flathead screwdriver usually does the trick for me. Once you get it open, your will still have to find a way to get the data off the hard drive inside (inside is a standard hard drive using a standard connection, SATA, PATA, IDE. Any computer repair place can retrieve that data for you). If you take the hard drive to someone to retrieve the data, the hard drive may possibly be defective. In that case, it is a whole new story and much more money to recover data from a bad hard drive.

Unfortunately, they are designed to void the warranty if opened. But since you mentioned trying different PC's, how about different USB cables, or perhaps a duplicate power supply, perhaps one of these items is the issue. There may be a software issue, in that instance if you can find an imaging program, like Acronis, or Macrium, they may detect the drive and **** the info off of it, in order to get any different results that windows the imaging programs will need to run off of "bootable media"

SOURCE: seagate freeagent 500g usb 2.0 beeps sound

I was plugging mine into a USB hub and getting a repeated beeping noise and nothing else. I then plugged it directly into my laptap USB ports and it worked fine. Seems to be a power issue.

The thing is, that they do not want you to open the unit, so they make them to where it's near impossible to open without breaking it. Unless you've done it before, and know what you're doing, I wouldn't recommend it. There are many places that do data recovery for a lot less than what Seagate wants. They are still expensive, but considerably less than $1700. Google data recovery, and get some estimates.

External Hard disk is not detecting on my desktop PC

Try a different usb port. Maybe a 1TB external hd is too big for your old computer to recognize. Old computers cannot handle a drive that large.

Connect the 320GB HDD before switching ON the laptop and try to repair using scandisk option to repair the drive. Also use chkdsk /f option in command line mode.

Red dot and beep

The problem is in most cases the Power Supply given is of too low of Wattage, at 1.5. After some time, it will no longer provide the drive the needed power, thus the red light.

Try another similar power supply of higher Watts (my Maxtor has it at 2.0 watts.

Try getting Higher power Supply from Radio Shack. Store Tech will Help you.

Lastly, inside the enclosure is simply a typical Hard Drive. Remove it and Slave it to your PC.

Seagate freeagent 500g usb 2.0 beeps sound

I am so happy to say that i HAD the exact same problem.
Its an issue with the drive disk itself. Long story short because i dropped the drive the the disk was no longer able to spin fast enough to start the drive (the beeping sound actually being the disk trying to start spinning.
After spending literally the last 4-5 hours looking for a solution I found a unusual method that basically either works, or it doesn't there's no it kind of works. what you need to do is unplug the drive, then plug it back in and start Vigorously spinning it whilst keeping the drive horizontal (similar to what you would do when your unscrewing a light bulb).
You have to try and do so simultaneously with the beep and it should "kick start" the drive (AND OBVIOUSLY DON'T LET THE WIRE DROP OUT AS YOUR SPINNING IT AS YOUR COMPUTER WONT RECOGNISE IT IF ITS NOT PLUGGED IN).
I Know this method sounds far fetched but put it this way, 15mins ago I was working out how im gonna get hundreds of pounds to restore this drive, Now, i've just finished copying my informations onto a laptop from the drive so i can take this piece of plastic **** back to the shop :D.......
Never again Seagate and Thank God for letting me find a solution.
