The lens cover did not close completely the first time, but after turning the camera on and off a couple times and making the focus work a bit by pointing at objects near and far, it was working normally again (much to my delight, and my son's relief!)
On Fathers Day, 2006, I received a Canon PowerShot SD700 IS, and it has served me well. Just before Father's Day, 2012, my young son dropped my precious PowerShot on its lens onto a wood floor, causing the smallest ring at the end of the lens assembly to sit at a slight angle. The lens would adjust in and out a little bit when powered up, but it would not retract, and the camera would display a lens error message, and shut off. After some research and working with the camera for a while, I figured that my chances of successfully repairing it were slim to none, and that it would be cheaper to replace it than to have it repaired. Determining that I had nothing to loose, as a last ditch effort (read: Don't try this unless you are out of options), I tried the following: Put the camera in shooting mode, turned the camera on, and tried to open the battery door in the middle of the lens adjustment so the gears would not be bound in either direction. (I'm not sure this step is necessary, but it seemed like a good idea). I Removed the battery, and then I tried banging it lens-down on the floor (padded carpet over plywood) with a mild to moderate amount of force. On the second attempt, the smallest ring appeared to straighten out. Upon reinserting the battery and powering up, the lens was able to extend and retract! The lens cover did not close completely the first time, but after turning the camera on and off a couple times and making the focus work a bit by pointing at objects near and far, it was working normally again (much to my delight, and my son's relief!)
Same problem here - the forum posting on the SD 500 seems to be a bit more active (for the same problem).

I have been trying to get some images or a service manual for the SD 700, with no luck...

Camera lens is stuck. Won't retract or extend. I turn on the camera and it has a buzzing sound with "lens error, restart camera" displayed on the screen. I can't fix the problem. It will not take pictures, but will display the ones I've taken.
When I turn the camera on the screen says "lens error, restart camer" and then turns off.
