Usually a protect fault will indicate a bad transistor in
the amplification section. I suspect that the control circuit is sensing a
fluctuation in the power supply and going in to protect mode. (assuming that
the protect circuit itself is working properly) If a voltage is too high the
unit will go in to protect mode to prevent damage to the speakers and the rest
of the unit. Expect a 60 to 80 dollar repair charge depending on how many
parts need to be replaced and what the repair labor rate is in your area.Hope this will help........
its most likely over heated. Try removing the plug and moving it away from the tv and any heated areas for atleast a day, then try turning it on and it should work..
If it only goes into protect when you put a dvd in then change the regional code.
Protection Error means that there is a malfunctioning component inside your unit. It will go into protection mode and immediately shut down to protect your system from any further damage. Unfortunately you would have to bring it to a dealer or repair shop to diagnose the exact malfunction and that could be expensive.

Hey guys, just had the same problem and found out it was because I had disconnected the central speaker. This it was creating a back impedance or something and reonnecting did the trick! i.e. check your speaker connections and check that they work... duff speakers could cause the problem too!
i have had samsung surround sound for couple months, only been used once, now when i power up, protect is displayed on front and then powers down, also, when it does work, sound is extremely low compared to when i first used it.
Turn on the HT with no DVD. Press the following buttons on the remote: ENTER 8, 4, 2, 6, 9 ENTER It will turn off. When turned again on it is a region free HT.
