Sounds like there is a serious fault in the motherboard. I'm assuming you checked that the AC adaptor is working ok? Check first that there is power to the adaptor and power out of the adaptor by ensuring the green led is on and not flashing, a flashing led indicates power is not making a circuit in the motherboard and therefore a faulty powerboard.
Try firstly removing the laptop's battery as it may be at a critical voltage and the system will not start because of it. Plug in your ac adapror and monitor what happens. Does the power light illuminate? If it does it should then boot up, if it doesn't, try a known good ac adaptor before going any further. If the adaptor is fine then you have a mother board fault and should contact a dealer/repairer for further advice. Hope this helps.
The motherboard battery is just a little round battery that you can buy at almost any retailer in most pcs. The model number to the battery is usually a CR 2032. This battery does not receive any power from your power supply. Have you noticed your PC loosing time over the last few months? This is usually a good indication that the motherboard battery is dying. The lights that you refer to though should only partain to the rechargable battery of the notebook. During the past two weeks while the red light was on, was the AC adaptor plugged in to the laptop and plugged into an AC source? If your AC adaptor has been plugged in and is not charging the notebook battery then there could be one or both of the following problems: your notebook battery could be bad or your AC adaptor could be bad. Something you may or may not know is that it is not good to keep the AC adaptor plugged in all the time. This causes the notebook battery not to fully discharge after being charged. Over a long period of time, the battery will not even charge anymore. My suggestion is that if you know someone with a similar AC adaptor to yours, borrow it to see if it charges your battery. If the battery doesn't charge then you know to replace. However, I am almost certain that you problem is the battery. Sometime older laptops like the one I have has a reset button on the underside. If yours has one try removing the battery and leave it out. Then plug in the power and press and hold the reset button for 10 to 20 seconds. If no reset button is on yours then do the same process with the battery removed and power adding, but hold the power button instead.
that is simple
1: bad power pack, or main battery is shorted, kick that big battery to the curb and use PC on AC pack forever if you want.
2: shorted things plugged it to the mobo.
3: wrong power pack try one rated near 100watts.
1,2,3 easy as 1,2,3,
gateway has no service manuals like HP. or dell
has that is why we trash this junk brand. sure cheap but is junk.
A little more info may be needed to narrow the reason down. What was it doing before this occured...was it witnessed, was it upgrading, was it turned off for the night and then the next day...this, was it running all night in hibernation...etc. Have you tried getting a universal charger and trying that. Do you get power indicator lights when it is plugged in?
I think it probably went into hibernate. Remove the battery while unplugged from the a/c adaptor for a few minutes. Plug it into the a/c adaptor, and see if it will boot up.
these people are right and there is definitely some hardware issues with your computer...which can be repaired but not really worth the money or effort.
It sure seems to be a motherboard issue. I will advise you to buy a new MBD. And to your relief, the data on harddrives will be "nil" affected by the motherboard change.
There might be an easier and cheap solution to the problem, but the area to be audited to find the solution is large with no guarentee that we will find a viable solution. Motherboard replacement will be an instant solution..
If you own a dell laptop, but a complete cover warranty that will include a free motherboard replacement and warranty for 1 more year..
