Reformatting Guru, How can I reformat the drive on the archos again? The last time I did it, it came up automatically as a result of a bad file read error.

If you are unable to reformat the hard drive using the camera, and the USB drive is not showing up on your PC, there may be an issue with the hard drive itself. Why is it designated E: if its your primary drive ?
If its not detectable how did you run diagnostics on this drive ?

Either enable a new drive letter or run the chkdsk utility

Click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to repair any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your Hard Drive. or an easier way to run the chkdsk utility Click start control panel administrative tools computer management ,disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools click check now click start two boxes automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now, start should schedule this task when restart have no input while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may further damage your computers Operating System and Hard Drive

Don't worry. Take the card out, firstly, and try wiping it with a dry soft cloth. Then put it in again and see what happens.
Fuji suggest reformatting/reinitializing from time to time. It keeps the card's system files in order. You can reformat using the approach on p104 of the manual, which is here:

However, before you reformat/initialize, make sure you don't have any images on the card that you've not transferred to your PC and/or don't want to lose. If you have such images, it is better you try to repair the card OR simply try viewing it first on a PC before reformatting. If someone you know has a card reader or slot on their PC that will read cards, try reading your card via a PC and if the files are corrupted on the card [unlikely] use commercial software to repair the file system on the card.

Definately try another PC. If it will read, back up your files and try a reformat. Drive may have mechanical issues though as they are not very stable while the platters are spinning.

Things to do before you reformat your PC hard drive

My Gmini XS202s did this twice both time cause the battery went flat while moving files across (I should always charge device while connecting to PC)

First time I reformatted device as FAT32 using fdisk (Windows formatting tool should do same)

Then downloaded latest AOS and copied to root directory. [get AOS from http://www.archos.com/support/support_tech/updates.html?country=gb&lang=en]

second time I ran mkdosfs /media/disk (disk was mount point for gmini). This seemed to fix the device and I lost about 20 files. but better than reformat.

no just put the cd/dvd in the drive and follow the instruction

this is due to the virus problem , go to folder option check view hidden files options, also check show protected files option there you can see all your files on pendrive, scan you pen drive and system to a updated antivirus

i had unpluged and plug it back in and now it dont work
