Hi i can't send and receive faxes. My phone

Here's the link to download the Lexmark X7170 User's Guide: http://bit.ly/c8EHEn. Go to Faxing for the instructions on how to go through the settings on the printer. For setting the printer to ring to answer at 0, set it to pickup on the 1st ring. To turn off the distinctive ring, set the ring pattern to any. Hope this helps.

It rings but wont pickup unless you pickup handset and press start fax

Your machine has the Easy Receive function. Although it's enabled, there's another setting the turns the feature ON, OFF, SEMI. To set the machine to automatically accept/print ALL faxes, do the following:

  1. Press Menu, 2, 1, 3. you will see 3.Easy Receive in the window
  2. Use the <--> keys to change from OFF to either ON or SEMI (in your case you want the feature fully enabled so change it to ON)
  3. Press Stop/Exit.
Your machine should now accept and print faxes automatically.

I have one line with three numbers attached to it... one of them is a fax. I have set up distinctive ring, but the fax machine won't pick up on it's specific ring. I have tried them all. I can manually...

Hello Tiffany,

As far as I'm concerned, HP does not make Fax machines that work off of distinctive ring systems. They only work off of the number of rings before automatic pickup.

My recommendation is that you set the fax number to a dedicated line.

If you need more assistance for automatic pickup, I can guide you through setup, if you can give me the model of your fax machine.

Fax answers on phone calls.

Hello There. Most household all in one units cannot operate on the ring characteristcs that you are describing.

They simply operate on the number of rings before automatic pickup to the fax machine. Therefore, you will need to just change the number of rings before the fax machine picks up. In this case however, you will not be able to use voicemail, since one or the other will will pickup.

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01102249.pdf
Page 63 and 64 (in PDF) or page 62 and 63 (hardcopy manual) explain the process.

Ignore the information about setting higher then voicemail. That information is typically only valid if you have the old voicemail devices in your home. Most people now adays get a voicemail service added to your telephone service, in which case you cannot control the voicemail as easily.

So again, in other words you will be sacrificing your voicemail for your fax machine. Only other way around it is to get a dedicated fax line to seperate the two numbers.
