1992 Ford F250 Logo
Anonymous Posted on Mar 30, 2010

I got a 92 Ford F250 and I was recently changing filters on it (its got the 5.0) and I noticed that the crankcase breather located in the air box always falls apart (i have had several of these types of trucks and they all did this) and I noticed there is always oil coming out of the tube. I was just wondering if this is normal or if something is possibly clogged? I also heard about something called "Blow By" and have no clue what that is or if this has anything to do with that? Thanks in advance!

Well blow by is when your rings are gong bad and allows compression to pass the rings and preasurize the crank case and ya it could push sum oil up that tube to soak that little filter if you have it running take off the oil fill cap and if you have blow by it most of the time will smoke out the fill hole

Your PCV valve is usually about a $2 part and is suppose to keep oil out of this tube. Follow the tube back to the valve cover and the PCV valve should be there.

Excessive blow by could also cause oil to get into this tube. The blow by is usually caused by worn piston rings or valve guides. The compressed air/fuel mixture or exhaust pushes past these areas and make it into the crank case. Usually if you have a lot of blow by, you'll see your dipstick tube popped out a bit too.

PCV valve is cheap and easy to change... I'd give it a try.

How do the crankcases gasses get into the intake air chamber of my 2002 volvo xc70 and does this or can this make the ngine rough

It's possible that you may have either a clogged breather box or broken breather box hose. The breather box is located under the intake manifold. It is sometimes also called an oil trap.

Oil in the air chambers

Most likely a blocked crankcase breather filter. This is located just in front (from the driver's perspective) of the air filter box underneath the engine cover. You can either clean it in petrol then fully dry, or replace with an improved version, available from BMW.

I have changed pcv valve twice and still getting oil in breather

The PCV valve does not control the oil situation, it just keeps the pans and valve covers from blowing off during a backfire. Excessive Oil in the breather is a result of excessive crankcase pressures, usually due to a worn engine, specifically rings.
SOME oil is normal, especially if you are loaded heavily and hard on the throttle.
There is a tester that measures crankcase pressures, but usually some other manifestation shows, like excessive oil consumption.

the PCV system draws crankcase fumes into the intake at idle and lower throttle situations. air going into the crankcase is filtered by the small PCV filter, where the oil shows up....

At highter throttle and lower intake manifold pressures, the system reverses, the PCV valve closes, and the fumes exit the crankcase VIA the breather filter. All of this is normal.

It costs tons less to periodically clean or replace the PCV filter.

I have a 2001 Ford Focus. Recently, I have a

I'm guessing there should be a tube or pipe that goes to the valve cover. Is the hole about a 1/2 inch in diameter? If so that's the fresh air intake for your "crankcase ventilation system". That hole should not be left open because, dirt and dust can can go directly into the engine and crankcase. There should be a tube, they are usually plastic.
