Hi, my webcan PDC 301 is not working, when I plug it into the USB port windows XP tells me new hardware has been found but it does not self install.......... the red kight is on but to no avail????

Same happened to me here. I tried to insall the driver using the supplied CD and it doesn't work properly on Vista or XP. Grrrr. Same with on a Mac. I haven't tried macam yet though.

Hi there, If
you want to download the pictures on your camera, try plugging it into
the usb port of your computer using the usb cable. Then turn on the
camera and make sure it is set to REVIEW MODE. Usually, this opens the sofware. It not, then, on your computer, click Start
button >> All Programs >> Accessories and choose Scanners
and Cameras. It will open up the window which will show the pictures
and from there, follow the steps to download them.

If you have windows xp, generally when you add new hardware. Windows does show found new hardware window, where you can select the driver for your new hardware.
Go to control panel=> Add new hardware & then select the appropriate drivers for your card.
To my knowledge, the 6P isn't a USB printer, it's parallel port only. Are you using a USB / parallel port adapter? If so, I believe that's the root of your problems - the adapter.
Try hooking it directly to the parallel port (shut the PC and printer down before doing so).
Upon restart, Windows will detect it, and may or may not "know" the model, so you may have to choose it from the dropdown boxes.
If it works when directly connected, you will need to either locate drivers for the adapter (if any), or manually configure it under the printer port properties.

Your computer is attempting to find the network connection through your LAN port. Your best bet is to reconfigure your network settings to seek its external network connection through USB, or better still, obtain a router(I personally recommend linksys wireless/basic routers due to stability), and simply use the ethernet connection through it. While this is bypassing the initial issue, it is also saving yourself a lot of hassle when it comes to retooling the PC's settings on the USB connection.
Yes, you can use the camera with Windows XP, but you will not be able to use the serial port to download your photos. Only USB port downloads are supported under Windows XP for the PDC 640CF camera.
