I would search for the service manual, because serious damage as things falling out will often send the VCR mode switch out of position. This device tells the electronics what the mechanial section mode is in IE: fast forward or playback etc. However VCR's mode switches and getting them set up right is nearly impossible unless you have done it many times before - hence the need for the manual. The reason I recomend you get one is not just that you will be able to identify the part straight away, but rather I suspect that the mechanism may have gone out of sync with the damage. And if it has you will have a hell of a job setting the mode switch without a the manual. And if that is not set right then all sorts will go wrong!
