I bought a JVC S9911u off of ebay the other day. It seems to be in great working condition but it was shipped without a remote. I have a highend universal remote which I tried to use to no success. So I bit the bulled and bough the OEM remote online brand new. The VCR is still not responding to the remote. So I have reason for concern. All I'm trying to do is get the super imposed "video calibration" messaging off the tape as it plays (I'm transfering old vhs tapes to digital).
1) Is there a way to do this without the remote?
2) Is there some sort of switch somewhere that turns the IR switch off and on? (Not likely)
3) My guess is that the IR is dead? If so, where and how do I got about fixing this and what should my expectations be around costs.
If you think it'll help, replacing an IR receiver is very easy (if you know how to solder) and very cheap (they're like $2 at Radio shack). Just open up the unit and look for the IR reciever, it'll be in the front of the machine. Here's a picture of one:

Remove it by heating the connections with your iron, and replace it with a new one. Yay!
To be honest, that's only one of a number of things that could be wrong. When you think about it logically, the problem has to be related to the IR reception, and the IR detector is a main part of that. I wouldn't say it's extremely common, but I have seen it happen more then once. On the other hand, it could be some other component of the IR detection system.
I would take it to any repair shop that's been in business for at least 10 years (otherwise they may not have much VCR experience) and I wouldn't pay more then say $35.

I don't know if this will help. Is it common for this to be the issue? What else could it be?
I'd prefer to get it done professionaly. Any thoughts on where and costs?
