I have had the same problem with of my Flip Ultra's. They are brand new. I've noticed that when plugged in, the unit will beep and display "check battery pacl charging paused" error. and then will go back to charging. It'll do this for about 4 times then continue charging fine after that.
See if it'll do that for you. The only time it seemed to stop charging was after displaying the "battery pack too hot" message.
I'm going to try the method of removing the battery for a few days and see if that'll fix it. I've tried all the other methods with no success.

I found a fix that worked for mine.
It was doing the same thing, freezing at the "Flip" screen and would not turn off. I did the remove the batteries deal. It worked once but issue reoccured 2 months later and the battery fix didn't fix it.
What did fix it was...
With the camera off, hold down the Right Arrow button and the trash can button at the same time and turn the camera on.
A few seconds later, I was at the start recording screen!!

It's real simple to solve this problem. I had the same issue and I all did was update my software online by visiting the FlipVideo website:
http://www.theflip.com/en-us/App/fvsw/5.x/update/
From there, all you need to do is fill out the three of four blank fields and it will update your software so it will install without a problem.
