1) In some cases, you can buy the recovery media from the manufacturer.
https://secure.tx.acer.com/RCDB/Main.aspx?brand=emachines
(needs your serial number and often is restricted to purchase during the initial warranty period)

2) Your computer came with a Recovery Management tool which would have allowed you to burn your own. (Too late for this to work)

3) In the Bios see if Disc to Disc Recovery (D2D Recovery) is enabled (Press <F2> during the POST to enter the BIOS.) It will be in the Main section. If it is enabled (or after enabling it - save and exit the BIOS), restart the computer and press <alt> and <F10> simultaneously when the eMachines logo is visible. You should enter the Recovery section and follow the directions. Please note this will reformat your hard drive and you will lose any data that wasn't previously backed up.

I sometimes find it hard to time these startup key strokes, try again until successful.

I hope this helps.

Cindy Wells
(The D2D recovery information is in a hidden partition (15 GB) on the hard disc, if your computer had the feature. Backing up your data and checking if the hard drive has this partition can be done with a LiveCD of either a UNIX or some other system utility programs (if you have a second RW optical disc or an external hard drive). Using a LiveCD requires hitting <F12> at the eMachines logo to enter the boot menu.)

Hi Cindy, Ive been searching posts for a solution to the issues im having with my with my emachines e525 laptop. It has crashed so im trying to begin the recovery process but I cant get into the recovery screen when i press f10 or f11 during the boot. Im not able to access the bios either. Each time i power on, i get the e logo screen which quickly changes to a black screen with a blinking cursor in top corner that changes into a solid black screen. No matter what i do these 3 screens keep looping in that order. Do u posssibly know of a solution to get me to the recovery screen besides buying the recovery disc from emachines?

That suggests that either the entire hard disk failed or the Master Boot Record is missing. (The latter means that your computer doesn't know where the partition it should boot from is.) Some OS files may also be damaged or missing. Until you try to repair the MBR, you won't be able to tell what else is wrong.

If the problem is the MBR, then any Windows utility program on a CD with a partition management feature can be used to fix the problem. (A Windows OS install or upgrade disc for your particular OS version may also work.) I'd suggest Windows PE (the Microsoft Windows PreBoot Environment - that sometimes was available with one of the commercial repair utilities) or a backup or partitioning software (I currently use Paragon's Backup and Recovery Repair disc since it's on top and worked even when the Windows disc didn't see the OS on the hard drive. I have others as well.) Again put in the bootable CD (LiveCD) and press F12 as it boots. You may need to use a unfolded paperclip to eject the optical disc tray when the computer is off. The hole is below and to the right of the normal eject button. For the Windows OS install disc, choose Repair and follow the directions.

Once the MBR is fixed, remove the CD from the optical drive. Then try booting the computer and check for additional error messages. (If other problems exist, you'll see a message about missing files.)

If it's the entire hard disc that failed, then the Emachines recovery disc won't help. The hidden partition's contents would be missing as well. In that case, you'll need to get a new hard drive and the appropriate Windows OS install disc. Although you might get lucky and see the files if you take the old disc out and use a USB to SATA/IDE adapter.

    I hope this helps.

(One issue to be aware of: sometimes the failure is actually at the keyboard and thus the Function keys don't tell the computer anything. If you can't boot to the LiveCD, this may be an additional issue that needs to be solved. For a laptop, it's a tough one to solve.)

hi, I just wanted to thank Cindy wells, I had bought my first laptop about five years ago,and two years ago an ex had a prefume bottle hit the screen, therefore that next christmas my mom had given me her older laptop(a year) since she'd had a custom desktop built. I'd just turned it on after about a year and a half to see all the updates it had to do! I allowed the laptop run all day/evening making its update to have it tell me it could not run on of the updates and stall trying to re install the update.it wouldn't allow me to skip it or change anything, nor would it allow me back on the computer. I attempted to look up the error with no such luck! I finally decided I would attempt to find a way to restore it to factory settings, and have had a problem finding a way to do that! I'm used to working with the software on a desktop where this is much easier! I'm so glad I found something that works!

Hi,

It will be tough to get the factory setting if you dont have the recovery CD. Still you can,
1. Get a bootable CD of the OS supported by your laptop model.
2. Install the Operating system.
3. If you dont have any imporant data, you can delete and re-create all the partitions.
4. Once the OS is installed, install the drives downloaded from the laptop vendor's site.

Thats it. There you go.

Please come back nd vote for me if this turns to be helpful for you.
Thnx

SOURCE: How do I restore my acer aspire 3000 laptop to

Most acer laptops have a special recovery feature..

While starting up your computer, when you see the first acer screen, start pressing alt and f10 at the same time, over and over..

You may have to attempt this a few times to get it to work.. If you see the windows screen, it has not worked, restart the computer again, and keep trying.

If you get it to work, it will give yo an option to restore factory settings. which will reinstall windows and make the computer like new.

Keep in mind this will erase all your personal files and pictures so you may want to save them first.

Testimonial: "Thank you so much for your prompt reply, its restoring now. Your assistance is much appreciated. Cheers"

I need to know how to restore my Compaq Presario 2700 to factory setting because it has crashed.

If you have the original recovery disc for the laptop, then I would re-install your operational system to bring it back to factory setting. If you do not have the disc go to www.compaq.com for customer support to see if they have the disc available.

I cannot find a driver for wireless (network controller)

You may need to do a clean install. It is possible the crash was caused by the wireless faulting out. If you have the time, create a recovery disk and locate your restore partition. This is normally D: drive. Do a format and restore the system to original factory settings using the restore disk you create and the restore partition. If you can't create these your only other option is to purchase a full version of Windows and do a clean install using that. Make sure you choose to format the hard Drive C: as it is possible that your drivers are stored on any other drives on your computer.
