An automatic watch is sometimes called a self-winding watch, though they can sometimes be conventionally wound in addition if the watch is not worn very much or the wearer has a very sedentary life. An automatic watch needs to be worn and the wrist it is worn on needs quite a lot of activity in order to keep the watch spring wound sufficiently to keep it going during rest and sleep periods.
Considering this, if the watch was new and faulty it should be returned to the retailer for replacement. Your contract is with the retailer and supplying you with a watch that hasn't lasted a reasonable time is in breach of that contract. Even if the watch has a manufacturer's guarantee it is better if the retailer takes responsibility for the carriage, insurance, etc.
If the watch was a previously used (previously owned or second-hand) you can hardly return it to the seller unless the seller has guaranteed it, though your local consumer protection laws might provide protection if you bought it from a business. Much will depend on the age of the watch, the price paid, the original price and how it was advertised. Such sites as ebay and Amazon provide certain additional consumer protections and if you paid by credit card the insurance might provide some cover as indeed might a house contents or personal all-risks policy.
In the case of a pre-owned watch you will first have to take it to a trusted local watch-repairer for fault diagnosis and a repair estimate, except in the case of a watch that is guaranteed waterproof. Such watches must be sent only to the manufacturer or an approved repairer if it is desired the waterproofing continues to be guaranteed.
The Abyss 10.900 is a waterproof diving watch that features a silicone filled stainless steel case and stainless steel unidirectional bezel on a black rubber strap. Silicone is denser than salt water, making the Abyss water resistant to grater depths. 10.900 is the depth in meters of the deepest location on earth, the Marina trench in the Pacific Ocean. The refractive index of silicone enables you to see the dial and hands from any angle under water.
You can typically buy this watch for about $425.00
If you are talking about the bezel, which is the bit on the outside of the watch, you should contact the Raymond Weil repair centre SWICO. They repaired my Othello when half the bezel fell off. They had it back to me in no time! Their details are on the Raymond Weil website: http://www.raymondweiluk.co.uk/t-faq.aspx
Clearly a screwdown crown is better for water resistance but most watches maintain a seal without it. I wouldn't test out the 100m claim but it should be safe in the pool.
