I have had the printer for two weeks and tried to scan a document for the first time yesterday. I have tried scanning in different formats - picture / text etc. and every time it comes up with the message 'Error - An unknown error has occured'. It has successfully printed and also successfully photocopied a document and printed it - so the problem is just with the scanner. Many thanks - Duncan

  • open hp director (click on the hp director icon) on the computer
  • select the option SCAN PICTURE to automatically set output type to jpeg
  • if that does not work, click on settings on the top, scan settings and preferences, select scan document settings or scan picture settings or the scan preferences menu
  • change output type from there

Scan in PDF format.

If you are using HP Solution Center, then you want to click on "Scan Document" (NOT Scan Picture). Then you should be able to choose "Document to PDF".

I have got a DCP-110C printer, how do I scan a document onto the computer then alter the text within this document?

Try this procedure and let me know how it goes

  1. Scan the page you want to convert into a Microsoft Word document.
  2. Save the scanned image in *.gif, *.jpeg or whatever format.
  3. Open that image, go to "File->Save As" and name it "xyz.tiff" in the "TIFF" format as shown.
  4. Go to "Start->Programs->Microsoft Office Tools->Microsoft Office Document Imaging"
  5. Go to "File->Open" and open your scanned document that has been saved in *.TIFF format.
  6. Go to "Tools->Send Text to Word." You will get a prompt stating this process will take time, Click OK. This will take some time depending on your computer's speed (a minute or two at the most).
  7. When it's done it will open up Microsoft word on its own and the scanned document will now be in editable mode.

How do I copy legal size documents

On an A4 scanner the process is a bit more complicated than on a sheet fed scanner.

You have to do two scans on these types of document.
First scan the top
Then scan the bottom
save each as different file names eg. legal1.jpg and legal2.jpg (assuming you save in jpg format)

Now with a suitable graphics program you splice the two pictures together carefully.

This may mean a re-scan if you got one of the scans crooked or badly wrong.

If you have a person that understands graphics packages they could show you quite easily

There are lots of different graphics programs and it depends on which you choose as to how easy or hard the joining of pictures is.

Scan views fine; prints fuzzy

Try to change the dpi to the maximum, maybe 600 dpi. This will make the picture more defined.

Cannot edit scanned document

Hi,

its like this, the OCR or the SOftware installed in your computer is limited. If you're trying to scan a document which has a picture or with text that uses different fonts like monotype, or those that are not usually being use for normal documents, usually it wouldnt detect and it become distorted. Anyways, here are the steps that i want you to follow.

1. Open solution center. (click start, go to all programs, go to HP, then click on SOLUTION CENTER). or you can see SOlution Center on your Desktop.
2. Click on Scan Documents, then the Scan documents setting will open. Change the settings to these.
* SCAN TO: Microsoft Word.
3. Then, hit scan.
4. After scanning, the folder My Scans will open automatically, just go ahead and open the scanned document.
5. From there, you can start editing the text.

..remember, the scan a document is limited, it will not read all types of fonts. if the document is using a "times new roman" or "arial" the scanned document appears to be almost the same with the original. But, if the scanned document contains pictures or stylish fonts, that would make the document distorted.

Please let me know if you still have clarifications.

Thank you.
