I spilled coffee on to the keyboard of my compaq presaria b1900 laptop. I wish to remove the keyboard to clean it, as two-thirds of the keys are no longer working. How is this done?
Hi Dobbin,
Tell me you like coffee black, no cream, no sugar. That makes the mess less sticky.
First off, I'd advise against dismantling a laptop. Try this first:
Get yourself some canned air (several cans) and a good vacuum. I assume you've gotten as much as you're going top get from the K/B via paper towels and such.
What we are going to do is freeze whats left and **** it out with the vacuum. Use the narrowest attachment you have .
Use the tube that came with the canned air to get it between the keys. Hold the canned air upside down so the propellant comes out. This will instantly freeze anything it touches, including you, so be careful, where eye protection.
Do a little at a time, Freeze, work the keys, vacuum, freeze, vacuum, work, freeze, vacuum. Get the picture?
You can do this with th machine running, preferably with Notepad or something similar up. This way you can tell when the keys come back to life.
I know it sounds weird, but give it a shot. I ran a help desk where we got two or three of these a month. The canned air is a little pricey, but nothing compared with the cost of the laptop.
Good Luck,
Mike
