How can active my system?

In some cases, say when you're building and testing a webpage locally (Local Machine Zone), you may still see the Information Bar when the web page executes any script, initiates a Pop-up windows, or a download. For testing purposes, one needs to follow any of these workarounds:

  • Rename the .HTM file to .HTA (Example.. Index.HTM to Index.HTA and test the file locally). HTA files have more privileges than the HTM files, can run active content on Local Machine by default.

    -or-

  • add the Mark Of The Web code such as <!-- saved from url=(0023)http://www.contoso.com/ --> to a Web page, where the (0023) value is the string length of your URL that follows it and Contoso is the name of your Web site.

The above is an extract from Local Machine Zone Lockdown - Developer Implications. See page for more information about the two workarounds above.
To totally disable the Local Machine Zone restriction (for running Active Content) (not recommended, though) for valid reasons, read below:
To allow any Web site to run scripts and ActiveX controls on your computer:
In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll down to the Security section of the list. Select the Allow active content to run in files on My Computer check box, and then click OK.

lmzlock_disable.jpg
To accomplish this via the Registry, modify the following registry value:
HKCU \ Software \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ Main \ FeatureControl \ FEATURE_LOCALMACHINE_LOCKDOWN
In the right-pane, create a new REG_DWORD named iexplore.exe and set it to 0
Values:
0 - Allows a Web page to run active content in your computer
1 - Disallows a Web page from running active content in your computer
To allow any CD to run scripts and ActiveX controls on your computer:
In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll down to the Security section of the list. Select the Allow active content from CDs to run on My Computer check box, and then click OK.

This is most like a problem with your graphics chip. You will most likely need to have it serviced. The lock button will "lock" your screen bringing you back to the Windows login screen.

This could be a sign of possible issues. I would check the drive for bad sectors. I would run a test of the memory (such as Mem test86) and verify there are no problems.

Disable windows active desktop then reactivate it. That will take care of it. Microsoft Windows XP users
  1. Open the Control Panel.
  2. Open the Display icon.
  3. Click the Desktop tab.
  4. Click the Customize Desktop button.
  5. Click the Web tab in the Desktop Items window.
If you wish to enable the Active Desktop, check "My Current Home Page". Add your current home page into your desktop or click New to add another web page and/or other Active Desktop features. To update the content, click the Synchronize button.
If you wish to disable Active Desktop, make sure all checkboxes in this window are un-checked.
Microsoft Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 users
  1. Open the Control Panel.
  2. Open the Display icon.
  3. Click the Web tab in the Display Properties window.
If you wish to enable the Active Desktop, check the checkbox for "Show Web content on my Active Desktop" and select the home page you wish to use as the active desktop.
If you wish to disable Active Desktop, make sure that "Show Web content on my Active Desktop" is unchecked.

Windows includes a feature called Active Desktop. One of the symptoms of Active Desktop is that it can hide all your desktop icons. To disable active desktop, right-click on the desktop, choose Properties, go to the Web tab, and uncheck "Show Web Content on My Active Desktop".

If that does not work right away, try rebooting the PC after making the above changes..

Desktop Restore Issue

It sounds like you had some web content that is no longer available as part of your active desktop. I copied the instructions for you on how to change it right out of windows help file. Good luck!

To add Web content to your desktop
  1. Right-click a blank area on the desktop, and then click Properties.
  2. On the Desktop tab, click Customize Desktop.
  3. On the Web tab, click New, and then follow the instructions on your screen.
You must be connected to the Internet to add active Web content to your desktop.
  • To browse Microsoft's Desktop Gallery Web site, in the New Desktop Item Wizard, click Visit Gallery. The New Desktop Item Wizard opens when you click New on the Web tab.
  • To select a different Web site, type the Web site address, or click Browse to locate it.
