96 grand prix slipping transmission

Its a 96 Grand Prix, automatic, the transmission is slipping, reverse is almost gone and it slips in drive. It's still working for now. I don't have much transmission experience especially a trans-axle. Is there a solenoid I can replace, the torque converter, or should I get another transmission?

Once it starts slipping in all gears it needs a kit. You need a hoist to get the thing out and back in. If you are looking for a low buck fix many junkyards will sell you a used one and put it in. They are almost always cheaper than a "Transmission Shop". If you have the tools and want to do it yourself buy a service manual for the car from eBay or Amazon or a former Pontiac dealer and have at it. It's not all that difficult with a hoist but it is still along day.

Ford Explorer, slips in reverse and when you put it in drive you have to rev the engine before it will engage. Once engaged it often slips in between 1st, 2nd and then smooths out after 3rd.

Pull the transmission & rebuild it

You should know when they slip
your done or the trans is

So if it had any chance to be fixed, you
ruined that by continuing to drive it

Now you can get out the check book for
about $3,000.00

Problem with 2005 gran prix gtp

Well, since the transmission in your vehicle is computer-controlled, I think the FIRST step in diagnosing the problem should be to ask the Powertrain Control Module what is going on.

Sounds like your transmission is slipping or your torque converter is bad.---check the transmission fluid level and see if it smells burnt and discolored.

you may change the filter and fluid, but in most cases it will not do any good. Find a good trans shop to check it out.

i have one of these cars i love it but and the transmissions GM used in them are not good at all there is a pin in the differential that has a tendency to slip out and the car will not move..happened to me but i was driving..it blew the transmission so hard the gears shot right out of the bottom of the car..it cost me 1500 dollars to replace it..you might be luckier because it dident blow up like that i would call some transmission places and tell them whats going on and get an estimate..
