Well if the inbuilt card reader does not recognize the SD/MMC card then we need to perform certain troubleshooting steps which are as follows:
1>click on start
2>In start search box type DEVMGMT.MSC
3>As soon as the device manager window opens up locate an option which reads as UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLERS
4>There would be a + sign next to the same, click on it and then try locate a driver which reads as REALTEK SD CARD READER driver or JMB38X MS SD SD/MMC xD Card Reader Driver.
5>Right click on that driver and then click on uninstall
6>Locate a tab which reads as ACTIONS at the top, click on it and then click on then click on SCAN for HARDWARE CHANGES.
7>try installing this driver:

My gateway computer won't read my 32gb sdhc card

If your current card reader isn't compatible with SDHC cards then you need to get one that is. While SDHC cards fit into the SD slot, they care electronically incompatible and won't work in devices not designed for them.

What is the SD MS/Pro MMC XD slot used for?

This is where you would take the sd or xd card out of your digital camera and place it in the slot to download the pictures from the camera to the computer.

Another way of getting pictures from the camera to the computer is that most cameras come with a cable that connects to the camera and the other end to one of the usb ports on the computer. Once you have the cable connected turn the camera on and the computer will recognize the camera as a device. You can then search the camera folders for the pictures you want to put on the computer. This way you don't have to take the sd or xd card out of the camera.
