Yesterday, I unplugged my USB connected External Hard Drive (I/O Magic Databank 200GB) & took it with me to work. In the evening, I came home & tried to connect it back to my home computer & for some odd reason, the drive no longer shows up (use to show up as F:). IN device manager, it says "Uknown device" in the USB area, also in Disk Management, it doesnt show anything...not even the volume. I just see my C: drive. I rebooted the server a couple of time, and at one time I did see the USB port in Device Manager as saying "Mass Storage", but now again it just says Uknown Device. The drive has important data. Could it be that I left the drive in the car for the entire day & the weather was quite cold??? As you say that the drive needs warming up.. The I/O magic site does not have any Drivers either. I have Windows XP, you cant contact me directly at [email protected]
Had the same problem with the 120GM IOMagic. I removed the drive from the case, detached the circuit board leaving just the Hard drive and hooked it up to a cable I bought that allows you to read any hard drive through the USB post. Was able to retrieve all the data on the disk. The problem was the iomagic interface board.
Extreme temperatures, either very hot or very cold, can certainly cause damage to your External Hard Drive. Based upon your description, it sounds like the hard drive enclosure has been damaged. This would explain why device manager can not recognize it. Your hard drive is plug-and-play with Windows XP, so no drivers are necessary. Have you tried plugging it into another computer?
If your hard drive casing has malfunctioned, then retrieving your data is as simple as putting the hard drive inside another hard drive enclosure. Hard drive enclosures are available at any local computer store, and also available on the I/O Magic website. Make sure to get the right size enclosure. Your hard drive has a 3.5" hard drive inside it, which is a standard desktop hard drive.
If you put your hard drive in another enclosure and it still isn't recognized by multiple computers, then the hard drive inside the casing has probably been damaged, and I would recommend contacting a data recovery specialist.
Have a nice day,

I have been using my GigaBank 250 with no problem. I have a similar situation but I just unplugged my storage device from my older computer which was Windows XP to Windows Vista and it did not recognize it. Then I tried to hook it back up to windows XP and still nothing. Any Suggestions?
