One day the fax portion of my MFC-7220 was working just fine. The next day, when I tried to use it, there was no dial tone whether I dialed using the handset or hook/hold. The phone line is working, and I swapped the machine over to another working phone line, but no luck. Also had the phone company check the line. No problem. When I lift the handset, I hear room noises and get a little feedback. When I punch buttons, I can create tones and make dialing sounds in the machine. But there's no dial tone in the handset or when I push hook/hold. The machine also doesn't respond to incoming calls.

The report you want is called "Fax Journal, and it's number is 4. Press "Reports" button (in the upper-right corner of the panel), then either go down (using up/down arrow keys) to "Fax Journal", or press number 4 directly, then confirm with "Menu/Set" key.
By the way, click here to download a PDF manual for your unit.
Good luck, and please leave testimonial if helped :)
What you are explaining should work. If you need prior activity reports from previous faxes, you can press Function then 2 (Act. Report)
I think you might need to press Function, then 7 then 1
From the manual:
Transmission Verification (Xmit) Report You can use the Xmit Report as proof that you sent a fax. This report lists the time and date of transmission, and whether the transmission was successful.
When the feature is OFF, the report is printed automatically only if an error occurred during transmission. If the report indicates NG, send the document again. If the report indicates you should check the readability of certain pages, resend those pages. If you typically send multiple faxes to the same destinations, you may need a reminder to identify each fax transmission. You can select OFF+IMAGE or ON+IMAGE to print a portion of the first page of the fax message on the report.
1 For the FAX, press Function , 7 , 1 . For the MFC, press Function , 1 , 7 , 1 . 2 Press or to select OFF, OFF+IMAGE, ON or ON+IMAGE and press Set . 3 Press Stop to exit.
Most of these will send a fax without even using the PC. Just connect a phone line, place the document in the proper position, usuallu print side up on newer models, and push the fax button, it should prompt you for the number. Once dialed,, the paper will feed into the scanner portion of the multi, and you will see it on the menu bar saying sending page 1, 2 etc, after if is done sending, it will dial and connect, yu should hear the typical noise a fax makes. then it will say fax sent or end or something similar, that's it, try sending one to a friend to make sure it's working. Now some simpler machines require you to open the scanner portion and lay the paper down in the glass manually, mine does it both ways. In that case just skip the feeding part, and dial wait for it to scan and send.
You might need to dial 9, followed by a comma or pause, if you are faxing from inside an office.
You might need to dial 10 digits, if you live in a high density location in North America.
If you're dialing a long-distance number, the person paying for the line may have disabled long-distance calling - check with parents / spouse / boss / landlord, as applicable.
