I have a humming bird 3d sonar and it shows nothing but clutter the transducer is clean and down . I just purchased the boat and it has no manual. You can choose the angle of the beam and it looks like it disects the bottom into halves. I can not get the screen to a normal view its just shows all clutter.

This is what the manual says:
The StructureScan transducer can be mounted on the transom,
jackplate, step or directly to your boat's hull.
When mounting it directly to the hull, you must purchase a high-
quality, marine grade above- or below-waterline sealant/adhesive
compound.
verify cable harness integrity at base connection of transducer , replace cable or check settings easy fix would be change display unit if unit under warranty as replacing transducer is not easy and economical
First, ensure that the transducer face is pointing down when the boat is level in flat water. You may want to do this step like a tv antenna, adjusting the angle of the transducer while watching the screen.
If that doesn't work, then try moving the transducer further into the water and repeat step one.
Sonar systems are (largely) directional, and will work best when parallel with the seabed (or lake bed etc)
Generally, that indicates air bubbles in the water under the transducer. If you have a transom-mount transducer, make sure the bottom surface is level or angled slightly down. If you have a thru-hull, make sure your bottom is fairly clean in that area.
