first: the C7180 will only work in ONE mode: wireless or wired. End of story there.
second: I spent almost 4 hours, yesterday, fixing this problem - "would not scan to computer because printer did not recognize computer for scanning yet would print & copy ok". I did solve the problem! Here is what I did: 1) removed all software related to C7180 ( make sure it is all gone ). 2) turned off all firewalls & security measures to ensure a clean, uninterrupted reinstall ( be sure internet connection is off for this to be safe ). 3) reloaded software ( hopefully you have the cd for this ). 4) followed all prompts for reload of software & then rebooted computer & tested copy mode, fax and finally scan. 5) went to HP site & made sure I had all updates & everything was ok with drivers. It was. I now have a clean install & all works as it should. The whole process ( after I figured out that it was a software problem ) took about 1 hour. Don't forget to reset your computer security! Be sure your firewall knows all HP software is good & firewall will let it thru.
This should do it.

You should have recieved software with the printer to do this, Look in the Hewlett-packard folder in the programs menu. It might be listed as HP Director. From there you should choose scan to as the option, one of the choices should be "to Fax".

Frankly Vista is a dog, and I'm not surprised at your difficulty. Have you tried installing the printer from Vista itself, rather than using the Printer CD? This can work if the printer CD is for XP (as many are).
