Samsung HLP4663W 46" Rear Projection HDTV Logo
Anonymous Posted on Mar 15, 2010

My Samsung HLP4663W 46 in was making a buzzing noise for several months. I know it could have been either the fan(s) or the color wheel, but I never opened it up to determine which it was. Now the TV quit working, and nothing inside is making noise. When the power is pressed, the sound will come on for a while then turn itself off. The LAMP light flashes, which the manual says indicates the bulb needs replacing. My Question: If the bulb went out, would the color wheel and fans stop working until I replace the bulb? I'd hate to replace the bulb and find out it is something else entirely.

Great reasoning work! In fact, the lamp will not light if the color wheel does not spin-up. Fans will not stop the process of lamp ignition. Instead, a fan will be detected and a message will appear on the screen telling which fan has stopped. You need to have the color wheel replaced.

You have 4 different fans inside of your TV. The biggest challenge - to pinpoint which one is bad. I would recommend just to get 'em all and replace 'em all. They will start fail one after another anyway.

Samsung DLP HL-R4266W..no sound or picture. TV is completely dead

Assuming the noise is a high-pitched whine, then yes, it is the color wheel.  If the color wheel goes out, the TV will turn on for a while, then turn off when it can't establish color wheel sync.  The color wheel has to be in sync with the mirrors on the DLP, so if sync can't be established, the TV turns off.
You can order a new color wheel from Sears or partstore.com (among other places) and replace it yourself, if you are so inclined.
