Lost time/inaccessible files on flip

While recording today the camera siezed up, screen went gray with image frozen...husband turned it off, back on it again, and it resumed recording. However, 20 min recording was lost and not retrievable. We deleted the remaining videos and yet the flip says only 40 (out of 60) is left. Somehow we lost 20 min of recorded video ~ is there any way to "find" that video and restore our flip to its' 60 min capacity?

I have the same problem and the above does not work. Is there another solution. I have tried to email FLIP but they are yet to respond. I have the Flip mino HD.

    Doesn't work for me.

  • Anonymous May 16, 2009

Didn't work for me. My folder is empty.

I did this fix from the Flip support site and it did not change anything. The Mino HD still shows 19:25 for remaining record time.

This may sound risky, but I did this and my Camera is working perfectly again... If you don't have any videos on it you need to salvage too badly this should do the trick.

1) Plug it in (obviously)
2) Go to My Computer and right click your video camera
3) Click Format
4) I clicked restore device defaults because it sounded safe (but may not be necessary)
5) Click start and begin the reformatting

After this i went from my incorrect 27:11 min. remaining on the camera to the full 60. Still records perfectly and the software is still on it and works correctly. Hope it helps some of you out there =)

This totally works. I copied the contents of my camera to a folder on my desktop just in case before I did this, but I didn't need them. Once I reconnected my camera to my computer after format, the Flip program opened and asked me to update my camera software, which automatically downloaded and installed. Works great, thanks!

  • curiousmikez Jun 14, 2011

That works, quick and simple. I too copied the Flipcam files over just to be on the safe side but it automatically updates the software when you reconnect to your PC. 27 minutes back up to 60, thanks Jamie345.

Have you tried this? (From the Flip website Help section)

We suggest trying the following to regain your full record time.

Connect your camcorder to your computer and open your
DCIM/100VIDEO folder. This folder contains the videos from your Flip Video camcorder. When your videos are manually renamed within this folder, they are no longer recognized by the Flip Video program. Please ensure that all videos in this folder are carrying their original name. For example, VID#####.AVI where ##### is any number between 00001 and 99998. Then, delete all videos you have previously saved from this folder. Your videos cannot be retrieved once they are deleted, so please make sure you have the videos you wish to keep saved into another folder before doing this.

Also make sure you have deleted any videos that reside outside of the
DCIM/100VIDEO folder within your camcorder's root directory.

After you have deleted all videos, disconnect your camcorder and check on your record time. If you have still not regained your full record time, please reconnect your camcorder and empty your "
trash can". Then, power your camcorder on and off 8 times.

I regained 18 minutes, but still missing 18 minutes...

For Windows users who weren't successful with the "Empty Trash" solution and don't want to re-format the Flip memory, this is how I solved the problem of lost record time after two incidents of video file corruption (Flip Mino HD connected to PC with Windows XP):
I made a Windows standard disk check (no special tool) after which Windows had created a hidden folder named"FOUND.000" which contained a file with all the lost clusters of the corrupted videos (to see this folder you have to change your file explorer options to see all files/folders including protected system files). The file had just the size which I had been missing. I deleted the "FOUND.000" folder on the camcorder and now it shows the full 60 minutes record time again.

I have had a jvc GZ-MG130U for a while. The kids have recorded a whole bunch of things and I finally downloaded it to the PC in order to empty the camcorder. But when I started deleting all the files,...

That's a bummer. I have the same camcorder and yesterday 10-3-2010 mine did the same thing. I deleted some files from the file folder located on my camcorder from my computer (which I learned not to do), went to the disconnect device on the computer and it said "safe to disconnect" so I did. The screen on the camcorder said "connecting to device" the whole time I was transferring files to my computer and after my computer said it was safe to disconnect. After it was safe to remove my camcorder, I unplugged the usb cable and tried to turn off the camcorder and nothing happened. I removed the wall charger and battery which finally turned off the camcorder. I then tried to turn the camera on and same thing as you, Everio sign came on and then the screen went blank. Nothing was accessible after turning the power on. One time an error sign appeared saying something like disc broken, need to restore disc to record video. I tried everything, turning on with wall charger and no battery, pushing buttons while it was turning on, holding down buttons, etc. Finally I tried something that made it work. Don't know exactly what I did, but it started working.
Solution: With the power in off position and the battery removed, as well as the wall charger cable removed, I flipped open the screen, opened the lens, connected the wall charger, turned switch to on position and let it run its coarse. It was on for 5 mins or less then shut itself off. I then flipped the switch to off, let it sit for a few minutes and turned it back on, while it was booting up (this part has no logic behind it) I pushed the "plastic" lock buttons for the battery and a screen appeared asking me if I wanted to restore the hard drive. I quickly clicked yes and all is well. The camcorder is back to factory settings but it at least works. Luckily I copied everything before it crashed. The key for the future is to not delete files from the camcorder while it's connected to your computer.
Sorry for the long post, but hopefully it helps.

Brand new Flip Mino HD froze & now won't turn on. HELP!

return it for a refund! i bought one, it did the same as yours. i returned it and bought the 2nd one. It did the same as the first one (and the same as yours.)

It is a piece of junk. Supposedly the previous Flips were good, unfortunately, I didn't have the previous models so my experiences only are bad.

My flip video won't turn off or record, won't be acknowledged by PC via USB port - seems to have frozen - screen is black but light behind it showing power is on but can't do anything with it.

To fix, I held the on/off button down for an extended time (around 10 secs approx) until it finally turned off. Left it alone for a few minutes and then turned back on. Worked okay. Also got a response from flipshare support who said there is a reset button inside the tripod space, use a pin to press that and then fully recharge camera via USB slot on PC.

Frozen screen on recording

There's a hidden Reset button at the bottom of the Flip Mino. At the bottom of the camera, there is a screw base a tripod. Inside of that screw base there is a little hole. Use a paperclip and poke it into the hole. Hold it there for 7 seconds. You may need to repeat this process 3-4 times. This should shut down the video camera.
