DCR-HC42 Am on vacation and camera is now telling me to re-insert cassette. Can't rewind tape either

Load cassette, turn it on, then message says re-load cassette. Door to cassette compartment only works half way. After fiddling with power, can get the cassette door to open and close all the way, but not with cassette. Tried several brands of cassettes, no joy.

When I put the cassette in, the camcorder tells me to reinsert the cassette and flashes C:31:42.  The carriage moves slowly when I try to load or unload the cassette.  I have inserted various cassettes, switched from the battery to the power outlet, reset the camera.  None of it alters the error message or allows me to record or playback a tape.

I've had this camera for a few years and this has been a constant problem. I stumbled upon a group of users with the same issue. Over the course of several months the prevailing wisdom on that group seemed to be to hit the side of the camera. Of course that does not seem like the right thing to do for delicate electronics. Never found a better solution however and sony has been useless on the matter. Mine has finally given up so a new camera is in order. but not a sony.

Same problem, says to reinsert the cassette. Changing cassettes and power source doesn't make any difference.

same thing. Cassette only goes in halfway, doesn't sound right when it goes in either.

Sony DCR-hc42 video camera problems

Buy a Sony-make head cleaning cassette and play it in the camera for 10 seconds. Do not play for more time, neither forward or reverse the cleaning cassette, otherwise you will damage the head of the camera. This cleaning cassette is to be thrown when it is fully played (and not rewound!).

Camera will not insert tape. Mechanism works OK without tape. Sony dcr-hc42

A C31:40 error indicates that the drum (the spinning video head) is either not spinning or is not supplying a signal to the main computer to tell the computer it is spinning. It could be a bad drum or a loose connection. It will likely take a qualified technician to verify the diagnosis.

Error C:31: in Sony DCR-HC42

Same here. When I place cassette into the carriage and snap it shut the servo does not activate to pull the carriage in the rest of the way. Has anyone found any tech solutions for this?
