Had same problem. Posted solutions are close but names/placement of buttons was different for me. For me, use the mode button (lower left) to get to what you want to change, then press and hold set (top left) until it beeps and item blinks (such as the hour value). Use the start/stop button (top right) to change values. Keep using the mode button to go from hour to minute to date to day. When done, press set button again.

I think I figured it out by accident. Press and hold the top left button (mode) until the numbers start blinking. On mine this is the alarm time set. Press the mode button one more time to get to time set. The hour will be blinking. Press top right button (start/stop) to cycle through hour, minute, date, etc. and press bottom right button (adjust) to change the number which is flashing. Press mode to finish

Press and hold he start/stop button then press (while holding the start/stop button) the mode button.  You will see a P appear, this will take it off military time.  To place back on same process, just push until the P disappears.

Everyone's model of this watch seems to work a little differently. :) Here's what worked for me. My model has 4 buttons.

1. Press and hold mode (upper left). Seconds will blink.
2. Press lower left button (sorry, don't know the button's name). Hours will start to blink.
3. Press upper right button to move ahead one hour.
4. Press mode button again to return to standard operating mode.

Three different buttons for one simple operation...setting your watch for daylight savings time.

This watch is radio controlled & should automatically set itself. The signal comes from Colorado and is the strongest between the hours of 10:00 pm & 2:00am. Also weather can interfere with the signal so I tell people to give them a couple of days to pick up. It also helps to put the watch near a window to help pick up the signal. If you tried all these things & it still isn't right you can set if manually by doing the following.

To set watch press & hold the adjust button until the time digits start to flash.

Press start/stop or split/reset to set time go through 12 hours to get to AM/PM

Press mode to select date press start/stop or split/reset to set date go through 12 months to set year day will change automatically.

Press adjust when done.

My suggestion is to not buy this watch at all if you did take it back or throw it away its not worth the aggravation trying to figure it out as it is not user friendly because the instructions given do not match the watch!!!!

Set date on 1440 sports watch 504-t5k085

My watch has model number 504-tsk085, labeled Timex 1440 Sports, and Timex provides the incorrect manual for it online. I wrote these instructions after careful experiment:

Upper left button: press to switch to a stopwatch, or...

Press and hold to enter alarm setting mode. Once flashing press again to enter time/date setting mode.
-- you can only do one or the other without exiting the setting
mode (time or alarm set).
- within the setting mode you use the two right side buttons
in obvious ways to set times/dates
Exit setting mode by pressing upper left again

Lower left button: light
Upper right button (when not setting time): reveal date while pressed

Lower right button (when not setting time): reveal alarm time while pressed.

ALSO: WHILE lower right button is pressed you can change alarm
on/off and chime on/off through the four possible settings by
secondarily pressing the upper right button repeatedly.

Stting the time

http://assets.timex.com/instructions/w3Instr.pdf

Try the link above for a manual.  It is NOT the same watch, but does have some buttons named similarly to the 1440.  Go to the Time and Date section.  The key was to hold down the SET button till the seconds flashes, then use START/SPLIT to adjust the value and MODE to toggle to the next field etc.
Best of luck
