After you have disconnected the brake hydraulic hoses (left & right) remove the brake parking cable. Place a jack on the beam just so that it catches it. Secure the beam with a ratcheting nylon strap or equivalent to the exhaust hanger anchors, not on the rubber hangers. Next you remove the bolts that secure the beam.

You will need

  • VAS 6179 hydraulic foot pump
  • VAS 6180/1 assembly tool
  • VAS 6180/4 (long adapter)
  • VAS 6180/3 adapter
  • 3416/2 press piece
  • VAS 6180/2 Yoke
  • VAG 1383 A jack with VAG 1359/2 adapter
or equivalent special tools to remove (press out) and install (press in). If the bushing is Hydraulic bonded you will need a plastic catch to contain fluid while pressing out.

You can get just the bushings at autozone, checker, napa auto part stores for about $30.00 to $35.00. You can replace them yourself or take the vehicle to the shop.

If you can find replacement bushings, take the control arm to a machine shop and have them replaced. The bushings are pressed in and you would spend the entire weekend trying to get them out by hand.

You can. I remove the bolt and insert a block of wood between the arm and the body to help keep the arm lower and then press the bushing in and out

What is the part I'm looking at?

They are actually called suspension arms , if you look on e-bay you can find a total of six of them, four run perpendicular to the car and two run parallel those are technically trailing arms but you can get all six four around 200.00.You can buy the bushings but you'll need a press to complete the job. thanks chris.

How to replace rear trailing arm bushings

This is a fairly involved job, the entire rear suspension assembly will have to be at least lowered. There are special installation/removal tools (bushing drivers) needed to facilitate.
These bushings realy fail, is there some reason why you have determined replacement; i.e. noise maybe?

You are on the right track, you can buy those bushings. Just go in and ask for the rear control arm bushings and they should be able to look it up and get the right ones for you. I have a 91 Camry, great cars.
