Not sure what you have done - but if this is a new device you are entitled to a free upgrade to the latest map which should fix yor problem. Connect device to your computer - Open TomTom Home - Click on Tools (at the top) - Select Latest Map Guarantee - this should download a new up to date copy of your map.

How to backup tomtom

Back to support home page The easiest way to make a backup of all the contents of your TomTom device is by using TomTom HOME. You can make one backup per device and store it on your computer. When you make a new backup, the old backup for that device is overwritten.
Tip: We recommend setting HOME to back up automatically before installing new content. [ more... ]

  1. Connect your navigation device to your computer and switch it on.
    TomTom HOME starts automatically.

If TomTom HOME does not start, do one of the following:
    • Windows 8:
Right-click on the Start screen and click All apps. Then scroll through the list of applications until you see TomTom HOME. Double click to open the program.
    • Older versions of Windows:
Click Start > All Programs > TomTom > TomTom HOME.
    • Mac:
Click Go in the Finder menu and choose Applications, then double-click TomTom HOME.
Click Back up and restore in the HOME menu.
  2. Click Back up my device and then click Back up now in the bottom right corner.
    HOME backs up your device.
  3. Wait until HOME has finished creating the backup.
    Then click Done.
To see where HOME saves your backups do one of the following:
  • Windows: Click Tools > TomTom HOME Preferences and then select the Folder Preferences tab.
  • Mac: Click TomTom HOME > Preferences... and then select the Folder Preferences tab.

To restore a backup, click Back up and restore in the HOME menu and then click Restore my device.

No maps found

When your tom tom comes up with the no maps found error message. There are several causes to the problem.
If you updated your map using the latest map guarantee and then get the error No maps found, make sure you install the latest version of the TomTom application.
Check for the latest application: Connect your navigation device or memory card to your computer and click Update my device in TomTom HOME to check if a new application is available.
You can check the version of your application in TomTom HOME. Connect your device and then click Manage my device and select the Items on my device tab. Expand Applications and then click More info.
Your map may require the latest version of the TomTom application.
Check for the latest application Connect your navigation device or memory card to your computer and click Update my device in TomTom HOME to check if a new application is available.
HOME may not immediately offer the latest application version when installing a downloadable map on a blank memory card. Re-connect your memory card to HOME and check for the latest application by clicking Update my device in HOME. HOME this time offers the latest application for your device. Try Installing maps on a new memory card
You can check the version of your application in TomTom HOME. Connect your device and then click Manage my device and select the Items on my device tab. Expand Applications and then click More info.
You need to also make sure all files are in the right places. Browse the content of your navigation device:
Windows XP: Click Start > My Computer and then double-click the removable drive of your device.
Windows 7 / Windows Vista: Click the Windows start button > Computer and then double-click the removable drive of your device.
Mac OS X: Double-click the desktop icon of your navigation device.
Check the following:
The map folder (e.g. Western_Europe) needs to be located in the root directory of your navigation device or memory card. This means the map folder may not be inside another folder. Before you move the map folder we recommend that you create a manual backup.
The map folder needs to contain at least the following files
cline.dat cname.dat cnode.dat faces.dat mapinfo.dat poi.dat tables.dat tmccodes.dat traffic.dat .meta (map v705 or higher will have/need this file) .meta.dct (map v705 or higher will have/need this file) .pna
If any of these files are missing restore a previously made backup or re-install your map to your device (in TomTom HOME click Add Traffic, Voices, Safety Cameras etc. > Items on my computer).
Hpe this was helpful. Thanks for using fixya.

No detailed maps found

Once your garmin nuvi brings up the message no detailed maps found, then there seem to be a problem. This mostly is as a result of a missing file that supports the reading of the maps on your device. The solution is for you to remove the device from your car, then you connect it to your computer, then you back up the software and format your device, then you reinstall its software back on, upload new maps on it and try turn it on, this time it should see the maps.
Before you carry backup and restore, first remove the device from the car and test it outside to see if it will read maps, if it does, then it means the signal strength is weak and the solution is for you to try out an external antenna on the device, but if it does not still see the maps, then you carry out the backup solution.
This should do the job for you.

I downloaded the US-Canada map update and now i turn my TomTom on and it says i cant us that map and now i cant even use the device is there someway i can restore the device back to default?

You could try reseting the device

1) Turn the device off.

2) Press the Reset button located on the bottom of the device (you'll need a paperclip to do this).

3) Turn it back on. See if it works now.

Or...

1) Do you have Tom Tom Home set up on your computer?

2) Did you ever make a backup?

If so, now is the time to restore from backup.

To restore factory settings:

1) Turn on Show All Menu Items in the Preferences menu.

2) Tap the Reset Factory Settings button (it's on the last screen of the Preferences menu).

Best of luck to you.

My tom tom XL now runs very slowly. I have updated the maps a few times via my computer which is fine but when driving the map cant keep up...and no, im not driving too fast!

Aww and I thought you might have found a warp drive lying around...

If you have an SD card in then leave it in for the moment.

Connect it to a PC and BACK it up ! IMPORTANT don't overwrite any previous backups !

when that is done disconnect it from the PC and then using a paperclip push the reset near the SD card slot
There are two variations on that. I found it best whilst it is on.
just press for about 3 seconds and let go. Then shut down and restart.

If not try it with the unit off.

Only had the slow happen once on any of the gps and that method cleared it (its called a hard reset)

My new TomTom One will not complete the preference installation

Lorna R from the UK support team solved my problem - but it did require some persistence. If a folder FOUND.000 exists on your device then firstly delete it. I turned off my virus checker and all other programs. Then:

STEP 1 Check your Internet Connection

- Make sure that you have a fast broadband Internet connection, ideally 2mb/s or higher
- Check that you are not at the end of a British Telecom exchange. If you are, then you will find that you are not receiving your advertised Internet connection speed and the connection will be unstable. This can mean that any large downloads via TomTom Home may time out and not download fully.
- Make sure that you are connected to the Internet via a Network cable and not wirelessly. You can plug a network cable into the back of your Router and connect it to the network card on the back of your computer. Also, if you connect wirelessly, you have an extra layer of security which can interfere with downloads.
- Please ensure that your firewalls are configured to allow TomTom Home to connect to the Internet fully.

STEP 2 Reinstall TomTom Home

- Download and install TomTom Home from : http://www.tomtom.com/services/service.php?id=16&tab=87
- Open TomTom Home 2.6
- Click on ‘Remove Items -> Items from My Computer’
- Tick the option for ‘Applications’
- Tick the option for ‘Maps’
- Click on ‘Remove Selected Items’

STEP 3 Make a manual backup of your device

- Connect your TomTom to your computer and switch it on
- On a PC, create a new folder on your desktop and call it 'Backup'
- On a Mac, create a folder on the desktop and call it 'Backup'.
- On a PC, Open 'My Computer', you will see the TomTom as a removable storage device, e.g. TomTom (E:), double left click into it.
- Click on Edit -> Select All, then click on 'Edit -> Copy'
- Go to your Backup folder on your desktop that you have created, double left click into it and click on 'Edit -> Paste'

- On a Mac, you will see the TomTom device on the Desktop, double click into it.
- Select and copy all of the contents of the TomTom device.
- Go to your backup Folder that you have created and double click into it.
- Paste all the files into the backup folder.

Please also look at the following webpage in how to do this:-
http://www.tomtom.com/3171

*IMPORTANT*

Only proceed with Step 4 and 5 when you have successfully completed a manual backup of your device.

STEP 4 Remove the Map Folder from your device

- Connect the TomTom to the Computer
- Browse the contents of the TomTom via 'My Computer', (on a mac, click on the desktop icon for the TomTom disk)
- You will see the Files and folders for the TomTom.
- Delete the map folder e.g. Western Europe, or Western and Central Europe, or United Kingdom and Ireland

STEP 5 Download your Latest map Guarantee

- Open TomTom Home
- Log in to your TomTom account
- Click on Tools -> Use Latest map Guarantee
- If you see a map available for download, click on 'Get it Now'.

The map can take a few hours to download depending on the map size and your Internet connection.

If you find that your map is taking more than 5 hours to download or the Download does not install correctly, then unfortunately your Internet connection is preventing the map from downloading correctly. Ideally, you will need a faster and more stable Internet connection.

Formatting a tomtom go 710

Hi, I probably cant answer all of your questions but I might help with some of them. You should be able to access your TomTom 710 without removing TomTom home software from your PC. It should be accesses as a drive through the USB connection in "my computer" on your PC. When a USB device is connected to your PC it appears as an external drive. Therefore you should be able to delete , load onto , or format the TomTom hard drive ( or with some other models the SD card ) as you would a normal drive . ( an example of this is where you might have a camer with SD memory card and relevant manufacturers software on your PC . you might connect your camera to the PC via USB and the camera software on your PC automaticly detects the camera for it to eb accesssed . However , the camera and it's SD card can also be accessed seperatly by going to "MY Compter" and it should also be visible there as an external UDB device / external drive ) . Now .. to another another question . If you do un-install TomTom home , I dont think it will also delete any backup of your TomTom , it will only delete TomTom Home software . ( the word "think" is mentioned because I have never tried this ). Besides that , you can choose in tomtom home , where you want any backups to reside , so you could save backups via TomTom home to a CD for istance. If you did that , then you would have the backup on a CD rather than your harddrive which means you could safely un-install TomTom home knowing that if it also removed any saved backup you would still have the CD with a backup on it. So , to summerise.... If it were me , I would make a backup of the TomTom by simply copying all the files on it by opening the TomTom up as a folder in "MY Computer" , simply drag any files and folders from the TomTom into a folder I have prepaired ( call it for instance "my tomtom backup" ) on my PC . Then I would format the TomTom drive then reinstall the backup and see what happens. If the TomTom still doesnt work properly , I would Format the tomtom again then use TomTom home to obtain all relivant files , then copy only the maps and .MAC files ( these are the authorisation files for the maps ) from my Backup to the TomTom manually ( not from tomtom home ). I would guess that would result in a working TomTom again ... Good luck.
