Washing machine drain problem

Samsung top loading wm model SW70A1IG/XTL.
Sequence of failure:
power on-fuzzy selection -water level high/medium/low selection anything -cold water selection -timer shows 77 min.-start button on - tiomer shows 74 min.(whereas no previous water level inside) - inlet valve not opening - drain valve opens with IE error message after few seconds - without draining all water drain valve closes after one second.
What I tried:
cleaned pressure chamber, pressure tube and checked pressure switch with a continuity tester. Pressure switch tested same continuity result for no pressure and for applying pressure using mouth blow in the tube. May be testing was not perfect.
Again I tried for same setting - this time water inlet valve opens - water comes in - but for if level selection is low - water becomes full then stops inlet valve-water incoming stops - now agitator revolves only one round - then drain valve opens - drain valve closes shortly without draining all water - IE message displays.
I am trying - trying - trying : please solve
(please note in any case water tap is opened, no air lock in water hose, inlet filter clean all checked)

Thank you sir. Model no. is confirmed as I have written. Made in Korea. Is it possible to check any fault in PCB using Multimeter or a continuity tester. Today after posting this problem, I went to market and got a continuity tester. I checked the pressure switch three point pairs. The result for continuity and infinity for a particular pair was same for pressure and no pressure in the pressure tubing.
I have no service manual for this item.

Still having problem. Always the drain valve opening first for few seconds. (without taking water after pressing start button). Then drain valve stops with IE message. Model no. SW70A1IG/XTL Samsung Made in Korea.

Can you please suggest me how timer can be checked. My washing machine has a digital display timer (square cube type with top side digital display). Changing major parts and to get a new one may be an easy solution, but before doing that I want to check the timer. I have little bit idea about electronics, I have a multimeter and a continuity tester. I want to use them, mainly this will add some more experience to me before accepting that easy solution. ( I wanted to diagnose the fault actually before changing any parts and I was expecting some fault diagnosis technique from the experts of FIXYA team.)
Can you also tell please what is approximate cost range of a new PCB of washing machine.

You know, it sounds not like a mechanical issue. Sounds like your control circuitry is off kilter..

this is a clear example of the timer/control system missing the signals. I believe you'll find that the core electronics and chips are skewed. Only way to resolve this will be to replace that whole control board. Not too hard, and it beats blowing into a hose, too.

you got a service manual for this item?

  • Anonymous Mar 09, 2008

can you confirm that model number please..not finding that item as listed among resources

  • Anonymous Mar 09, 2008

Only when it's necessary, microdude...only when it's necessary

  • Anonymous Mar 09, 2008

ok...well..then you probably have a bad board...continuity is useless for an integrated circuit like the one that controls your washing machine

I did not find that model number in Samsung US website, perhaps you can find it through their Japanese site.

thanks for using Fixya..got to head for the sack now.

big issue with multimeter and the panel control is that it's a true state flow chart approach. Not a resistance approach..it either works or it doesn't

Here's a few instruction's How to Diagnose Washing Machine Problems

Step 1:
If the washer won't start, check the power cord or reset the circuit breaker depending on the issue. It may be overheated and shut off temporarily. Let it cool for 30 minutes, and if it still won't start, call a professional.

Step 2:
If the motor transmission failed or the drive belt has broken, these need the assistance of a professional.

Step 3:
If the washer won't drain, clean out the drain hose and straighten any kinks. If the drain hose fits too tightly in the standpipe, adjust it to allow for a minimum of 1.25 inches for airflow so water can drain.

Step 4:
If the washer won't fill or fills slowly, turn the faucet handles counterclockwise as far as possible. This is usually the result of partially open faucets.

Step 5:
Call a profession if the washer overfills. This means the water-inlet valve or switch is defective.

How to Fix a Washing Machine That Fills Slowly

    Things You’ll Need:

        Old Toothbrush

        Small Bucket

        Adjustable Pliers

        Small Flathead Screwdriver

    INSTRUCTIONS:

    Step 1:
Turn off the water faucets that feed the machine.

    Step 2:
Unplug the washer and pull it far enough away from the wall that you can get behind it to work.

    Step 3:
Remove each water-supply hose, using adjustable pliers. Start at the end that connects to the inlet valve on the back of the washer (see A). Hold a small bucket under each hose as you remove it to collect any water that's left in the hose. Then remove each hose where it connects to a faucet.

    Step 4:
Locate the screens. Most washers have intake screens in the hose ports on the back of the machine. But your machine also may have aftermarket screens. They'll be inside the hose couplings, in the ends that attach to the faucets.

    Step 5:
Gently pry out the screens using a small flathead screwdriver (see B). Take care not to dent them.

    Step 6:
Clean the screens, using an old toothbrush.

    Step 7:
Reinstall the screens, using the tip of your screwdriver to push them firmly into place.

    Step 8:
Reinstall the hoses and tighten the couplings securely.

    Step 9:
Turn on the water to check for leaks, then plug in the machine and push it back into position.

    Kindly regards,
    -micromaster

A washing machine that won't drain can be as simple as a small clog or it might be time to call the maytag repair man. Follow these trouble shooting steps to possibly save some dough.

    Things You’ll Need:

        Basic tool kit
          Flashlight
            Bucket
              Rags

    Step 1:
Check hose for kinks. Straighten hose best as possible or replace. If hose is looping gravity may be the problem. Try cutting off excess.

    Step 2:
Test lid switch for "click". If you don't hear this "click" you may try replacing it by ordering a new one from the manufacturer and following installation instructions. Fairly easy job for a do-it-yourselfer.

    Step 3:
Check belts to see if they are loose or broken. Most washers have removable panels that let you get to the pumps, motors and belts. Belts can also be done by a do-it-yourselfer but can get tricky, you may want to seek a friend who has some belt experience.

    Step 4:
Check hose that connects tub and pump. Remove hose with bucket and rags close by, check for obstructions.

    Step 5:
Check pump with voltmeter could be an actuator(a value that controls what flow). Not a good idea to play with water and electricity find someone who knows what they are doing.

    Step 6:
Listen to pump. If it sounds like it's trying to pump but the water is not moving, it could be something stuck in the pump. Remove pump and clean. Again another moderate job for a do-it-yourselfer. Unplug machine from power source before and remember some electrical equipment will hold a charge even after unplugged.

    Step 7:
    Call a professional.

If you were not learned to handle or to fix that specific work, maybe it your best bet is to call a Professional that can Service the unit..

Just reminder Dkray, Let just say that you are trained to fix washing machine. There's so many more thing's you must have to know, make direct plan & execution and prepare for other complications.

Remember "Don't just Look on the problem, Look beyond it and there you will see the Solutions"

Why the inlet valve is not stopping running water?

What happens with such electrically operated valves, is that a calcium (or other mineral buildup) prevents the rubber seals from stopping water flow. You need to replace the valve(s), or clean them thoroughly, using either LimeAway or CLR.
