We got a New Bright Great American Express Denver RR Train Set (runs on batteries) from garage sale. No instructions. There are two switch pieces, 4 straight pieces and 10 curved pieces. We cannot figure out the layout. It doesn't meet together in an oval. Are we missing pieces?

Ours is a really old model, but the on/off button is located on the second car (coal car) towards the very front. It's red on our set. I am looking for help on the smoke part. I can't remember what we're supposed to use for that.
Yes, additional track is available from several places, such as Hobbylinc.com, and TowerHobbies.com. At this time, just after Christmas, they are out of stock, however. Walthers.com has them in stock (1-4-2011). You can find extra track on sale on eBay, as well. Be sure to get the track with the brass covers, as New Bright sells battery powered trains that use bare plastic track, which will not work with the 384. A Google search will turn up more sources.
1. A track connector box. Looks like a "T". It slips under the track to make the track power connection. The transformer plugs into it (2 pin Molex type connector) and the command console (has an RJ11 telephone jack type connector on it)
2. A large square transformer. One end plugs into the wall and the other into the track connetor box.
3. The Command Console. Has the on/off button, forward, reverse, mute, sounds and speed contol on it .. has a connector that looks like a telephone plug.
Unfortunately... DO NOT look to New Bright for missing or non working parts. New Bright does not offer repair or replacement parts for thier products. :-( ....

This train set is very particular and getting it to work each Christmas is a family tradition in frustration. First you must make sure that all the pieces of track are connected properly and that the track is perfectly symmetrical and flat. We double-check the battery positions every year and find one in wrong. There are + and - signs, but they're hard to see; use a flashlight. There is a black toggle switch below and behind the red stack that toggles forward (to make the train go forward) and backwards (reverse); straight out perpendicular to the train is the "stop" position. Also, you have to start at a stop/switch station. One other note: behind the red stack, there is a smaller black stack. If you turn this, you can make smoke come out of the stack. I think I remember someone suggesting a drop of cooking oil. Hope this helps!!! Hope you get it set up for Christmas!!!
