Before you change anything - is this a new device you are hooking up or had this thing worked in the past? First thing to do is reboot everything starting with the modem and ending with the computer at the end of the line. Wait at least 30 seconds between each device. Review all the connections - everything plugged in where it should be? (this is of course your question - see more below).
Eithernet connections (plugs) are RJ-45. The RJ-45 looks like a RJ-11 (telephone jack) only bigger. Typically, the RJ-45 will not fit into the RJ-11 AND SHOULD NOT. Why? Your Cat 5 eithernet runs on very low voltage and signal (packet switching). If you succedssfully get the RJ-45 CAT 5 cable into the RJ-11 phone jack, when the phone rings, you will be sending 60 volts into your network. Can you spell "Do I smell smoke?" A RJ-11 will have up to 6 wires (one pair or two pair or three pair) in the jack and up to 6 'buds' on the RJ-11 plug. A RJ-45 will have 8 wires (in the jack) and 8 'buds' on the plug of your cat 5.
Your device may say DSL on the Cat 5 connection - count the wires inside or the jack.
There are other Cat 5 connection types, punch down and terminal screw types, I dont think you are talking about either.
On your AT&T modem, you should find a RJ-11 which will attach to a near by telephone jack and a RJ-45 for your Cat 5 cable. Your modem may also serve as a router and as such would have additional RJ-45 ports. I suspect you are using a separate router for your home network. As such, one of the ports on the router should be marked Internet or Upload or maybe it is a special color or is set aside from the other ports. That special port will be connected to your modem and your other computers will use the other, lesser ports.
Of course, you could call your service provider for clarification also.
Thank you for your question @ FixYa.com - I am sorry you are having this trouble and I hope I have helped you in some way. I hope you are able to get your system back up in short order.

Tools and Materials You Will Need Crimper with RJ-45 die. Wire stripper Wire cutter RJ-45 plugs Cat-5 UTP cable Optional Tools Wire Tester Procedure 1. Strip off insulation 2. Untangle wires 3. Place wires in correct order & straighten. 4. Trim wires to desired length. Note: If the wires are too long the plug will not crimp onto the insulation for strength. 5. Slide wires all the way into the plug. Make sure not to disrupt the color scheme. 6. Crimp plug. 7. Repeat steps 1-6 for the other end. 8. Test wire using optional test equipment or between working computer and hub for patch (straight through) cables ,or between switches for crossover cables. Wire Color Scheme Pin Color Diagram 1. terminating a RJ 45 plug means to put a RJ 45 plug on the end of a suitable cable. This is done by making up a si\uitable cable and skinning the tips of the cable and inserting them in the right order to the plug and then using a special RJ 45 crimper mashing a plastic plug down on the wires. You can purchase such an arrangement from an electronics supplier.
Your question is a little confusing ... chain saw networks?
I believe you want to know how to build a wired computer network ...
You will need special tools to do this including a RJ-45 crimp tool. You should use the highest quality ethernet, 'Cat 5', Cat 5e', wire available to you. On the ends you will install RJ-45 connectors (8 conductor 'plugs'. Choose and stick with one of the several color codes for placing the conductors into the RJ-45. Color code guide should come with your special tool. Make sure the ends are in proper order, trimed square and inserted fully into the connector before you crimp. Purchase a test tool to verify your work. Expect to pay $50.00 US or more for the testing tool. Cable, connectors, wire, router or switch and other hardware should be available where communications or electrial supplies are sold.
Some RJ 45 jack cable has fault so try with another RJ 45 jack cable ..
Purchase new rj 45 jack cable from nearest computer shop.
There must be 2 port on modem 1 for ADSL phone line cable and otthr for LAN ethernet port means RJ 45 jack port.
Try with another rj 45 jack cable it should be connect.Make sure that LAN port of modem is not faulty means make sure pins on that port are not break.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
Thanks for using FixYa.
Good day..You should have knowledge about the color coding for cat-6 cable termination. Its called "termination" computer term.if it is a straight-throw use this color code:RJ45 must face at you when you arrange the wire colors..WOrange,Orange,WGreen,Blue,WBlue,Green,
WBrown,Brown..(W=White).
Then use a Crimping Tool to crimp it.Flat that twisted
wires before you insert to rj45.
Hope you are okey with this.
Ask me if problems occured.
Mastergani
Do not use the usb port or cable. use the RJ 45 port instead. and configure PPPoE and connect using UTP / STP cable with RJ 45 connector straight crimped.
Either your wallmount is not correctly crimmped according to the standards or your cable is not correctly crimmped according to the standards. So its better you crimp the cable and fix the R.J 45 connector in the sequence given herewith.colour coding of the cable:-
1-oranage white
2-orange
3-White green
4-Blue
5- White blue
6-Green
7-White brown
8-Brown
The same Sequence should be at the wallmount and at the R.J 45 connector.
The color is not so important as the cable follow the same standard on both ends.
It has been my misfortune to find non-standard wiring in a facility, so long as they keep the relationship of the pins the same it will work, if the installer did not then you cannot trust any of the work and MUST either redo it all or have it all tested and certified by a cometent network cable installer.

RJ-45 Pins are with the spring tab down and read left to right. Do you have an RJ-45 Crimping tool?
