Well depends on how far it turns the volume down as to what the cause is and if the volume bar on screen display comes on when the vol. goes down. if it just goes down a little you probably have the "smart sound" setting turned on in the audio menu turn it off and see if prob. goes away. if the vol. bar comes on the screen whenever the vol. goes down the you most likely have a bad button on your front panel and it doesn't have to be the vol. down button. it you think it is the button it would need solder work to be changed most likely shop job.
Yes this is a common problem in this model and it's almost always a bad tact switch, omne of the front diplay buttons,it won't seem bad to the touch but they make internal contact intermitantly and cause an outward symptom like the volume going down. confirm for me you do see the on screen display bar for the volume going down.also if you try with remote to turn up while it's going down does it seem to fight to try to turn back up the volume usually just causes the volume to stop as long as you hold the vol/ up button down. please confirm these things for me.
OK you have a bad switch very common problem in this model and very repairable--when i do these i change all 4 switches on that panel.. now the model number you gave did not come up on the philips web site. I am an auth. service center and have full access to manuals and parts listed. my guess was 27pt6341/07 if that is your model# then the location numbers for the switches called "tact switchs" you will be able to use the model number and location number to order parts from a dist. vol+ loc#1011
VOL- LOC#1012 CH+ LOC#1013 CH- LOC#1014
These parts are solder work to change. Good Luck
ps if you confirm you gave me a good model # than it may be an overseas model not listed on the North American web portal which ever when you order parts use your confirmed good model number and location numbers

opened tv (not a rear projection, my mistake) it is a crt, checked solder joints they are fine any other suggestions?? cheers
Sorry meant to say that on screen display does come on and using remote does 'fight' the volume going down and cause it to stop at whatever volume it is at when volume up on remote is pushed
