I would check the brush roller and make sure it turns good and replace the belt on it . When you smell burning rubber most of the time it is the belt .
Take a look at the help article here. If bristles are worn you may need to install the brush roll in a different position (details HERE) or purchase a new brush roll.

Problem: I lost my manual. How do I use my vacuum on hard wood floors? How do I use attachments, where do they attach? Hello, I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Kirby Ultimate Diamond Edition You can cal the Kirby factory to request a new owner’s manual and they will describe how to use the vacuum on hardwood floors. There is a felt piece as wide as the brushroll area that will clip on to the bottom of the revolving brush area so that you hard wood floors don’t get scratched. The Kirby head will dial off and the Kirby head will come off and the attachment hose will connect to the front of the Kirby and that is how you use the attachments. Also contact your local Kirby vac dealer. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions. http://kirby.comContact Us by Phone United States and Canada 1-800-494-8586 Between the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm EST Monday thru Friday Don – The Vac Man Go Ahead.Use Us.
Check to make sure the front nozzle is on correctly and also the bag base, make sure it is pushed all of the way in. There are safety switchs at these 2 spots and have to be engaged to work. You can't tell by looking at the cord to know that it is ok or not. Use a continuity meter to check that one side on the cord isn't open. Could also be a bad switch, carbon motor brushes not making contact. Armature bad in the motor. So there are several probables for it not working.
