If you are referring to the Sansa Clip, then you must connect the mp3 player to the computer using the USB cord - make sure that your computer has a USB 2.0 port, or it may not have enough juice to recharge the player.

Battery doesn't hold a charge - 1 hr play from the start - even thought I have charged up to 5 hours

How old is it ?? Try and charge it over night-- It should operate longer than 1 hr. Maybe bring it back for exchange.. ?

Sansa Clip won't charge

Here's the thing, technically it doesn't need to be turned on because it's supposed to turn on by itself.

I've had a problem sort of like that. It might be the plug, but it also might be the computer. I'd either suggest try plugging it into another computer or getting a new plug.
