I managed to successfully refill the black cartridge for the S305; I did it when the printer warned of 'very low black ink' (although it didn't print very well - i.e. grey - until the following day). It kept displaying 'low ink' but printed fine for a few months.
I think if you can catch it before the printer decides it needs an 'official' refill or replacement then it works (although when exactly this is is a mystery, as it always displays 'low' for black ink).
Yesterday, the printer decided it wouldn't print until the cartridge was changed.
Refilled; waited for half a day;replaced several times; turned the printer on and off 5 times with no cartridge in (to see if it would wipe the printer's memory of the cartridge); and spent about 4 hours online trying to find a solution.
If it starts working tomorrow, I'll let you know. I don't want to mess about with software that may reset the ink levels. (If anyone finds some that works, please post!)
It looks like Lexmark have ensured they can pile in the cash with their original cartridges.
I've heard about generic cartridges that are chipped to avoid the above problem - I'll visit my local refill store soon.
There must be a way round this!
Cheers, Fronter
Hi Fronter,
The best way around this would be to charge Lexmark with fraud, deceipt and theft.
There is a tiny printed circuit "coil" between the top sticky lable and the 100 series cartridge series bodies.
Under the printed circuit coil there is a tiny tranlucent button with either a fuse and/or a further coil and/or microchip within (there is no physical.contact with the ink).
Therefore it is appears that the chip decides how many times it has passed by the printer's sensor as to how much ink it is assumed to have used, not the actual level.
Hence the statement from the printer that "an undetermined amount of ink remains"..
The said sticky lable states not to remove it and that the cartridge it is not licenced for refilling.
Obviously it's licenced as a rip-off refill.
I bought another black ink cartridge and and reset the printer to only print in black ink.
However the colur ink cartridges "assumed" that they were being used and the indicated levels dropped although they are in reality half full.
I will never buy another Lexmark printer and I sincerely hope that the directors of Lexmark are jailed for this scam. Fozzie.

For the most optimal output experience with your model, I recommends that you update your printer firmware. The firmware helps ensure that you receive the highest yields of ink available from the cartridges, which offers the greatest value and means fewer necessary cartridge replacements. Please visit the Lexmark website to download and install the Lexmark S300 Series Firmware Update. If more than one download is listed for your model, choose the first download in the list. If it is the wrong firmware level, an error message will tell you which firmware level is correct.
