How do I clean my HP Laserjet 4L printer?

There are two ways of cleaning the HP 4L's:
  1. Purchase laser cleaning sheets.
  2. In your user manual there is a section that instructs you to create your own cleaning sheets.
This will clean toner off the transfer roller and the fuser areas. Additional cleaning can be completed with canned air and the specialized cleaning towels also available for purchase. Remove toner cartridge and carefully wipe the interior of any toner or paper debris.

DO NOT USE ORDINARY PAPER OR CLOTH TOWELS!

These can leave debris in the printer and contaminate the transfer roller causing very poor quality prints.

Skipping labels

Do you use adhesive labels? It looks like the printer is unable to make the difference betwen the labels. Verify that the printer it's not set on Continuous mode for the media type. Verify if there is any label (or pice of label) stiked on the upper media sensor (gap sensor). You can locate the upper media sensor using the User Manual (page 74). There is an User Manual available for download from Zebra website. You will find there precious information. The manual is very explicit and you will learn how to maintain your printer and how to troubleshoot some common errors. Clean your printer, assure to put the supplies on the right path, close the printhead and press Pause to enter in Ready state.
You can clean the sensor with an coton cloth dampened into isopropylic alcohol.

It's skipping lines. The lines before and after the skip are smudged

Have you tried doing a Head Cleaning, this is accessible through the printer options in control panel or through the printer itself (check manual).
Find the manual and setup guide here.
You should also try re-installing the drivers also available in the link provided above.

My wife tried to print on T-Shirt tranfers meant for ink-jet printers, and they melted onto the fuser roll, and it stinks. I need to remove the fuser assembly and clean it, but could use some instructions....

This might help. I did the same thing with my laserjet printer.
Staples has laserjet cleaning sheets. I ran several sheets through the printer after I pulled most of the transfer paper out.
The sheets are one use sheets so, you will need a few. They are impregnated with cleaning fluid on textured paper.
These sheets clean the entire paper travel path.

Print is not solid enough to read

Either head need cleaning or the ink is running low.
You have to clean the print head manually. The head is on the ink Cartridge.
Look in your manual for a picture. A picture may also be on your computer instruction on how to change a cartridge.
A cleaning solution is available to clean the head. I get mine when I buy ink to refill.
I hope this help you
