The challenge 3.5 ultrasonic humidifer is very similar to the Vicks one on the inside (same nubuliser etc.). It's manual is here
http://www.kaz-europe.com/wp-content/uploads/VH5000E_OM_01JUN11.pdf and its made by www.kaz.com - they manufacture humidifiers under a few different brand names. The vicks cleaning instructions are more stringent, I think because they are marketing this as a children's humidifier - they recommend bleaching the unit.
The easiest ans simplest way to clean it, is too mix a 50/50 solution of White Vinegar & Bottled Distilled Water (enough to fill the tank) and fill the the tank with the solution. Allow it to set for 30 minutes, then turn the unit ON. Allow it to run, until the tank is half empty. Pour out the remaining solution and fill with the Bottled Distilled Water Turn the unit ON and run until the tank is almost empty. Following these instruction will remove all the lime and calcium build up in the unit.
Tip: Using bottled Distilled Water rather than Tap Water, will totally eliminate calcium and lime buildup.
I hope this helped you and thanks for choosing FixYa.
The outside you can clean with warm soapy water. The inside can be flushed with a 50/50 solution of White Vinegar and Bottled Distilled Water. Fill the tank and run the unit until the tank is almost empty. Pour out the remaining solution and fill the tank with more of the Bottled Distilled Water. Operate the unit for 30 minutes and the previous solution should have been flushed out by then. I would recommend using Bottled Distilled Water all the time rather than tap water. As tap water has a lot of minerals in it that can cause calcium scale and clog the unit.
On the Vicks v-3100 the water tank should lift off of the unit. Flip it over and there is a lid. Open the lid and fill the tank. Once you've filled it back up, put the lid back on. Flip the tank over to make sure there are no leaks, then put it back on the humidifier.
Note: It's very important to check to make sure the tank isn't leaking before you put it back on the humidifier, if it is, it will flood the reservoir, in turn causing water to leak out of the bottom of the humidifier (which is one of the major complaints about the 3100).
